Why people do not fly like birds: the meaning of Catherine's monologue

Probably very few people, at least at some point in their lives, did not ask themselves why people do not fly like birds. Only in childhood this question is most often caused by natural curiosity and the desire to discover something new. But in adult people, it often occurs during moments of intense emotional excitement, when you just want to take and disappear from the place where you are now. Only there are no wings ... Outstanding minds were devoted to the question of why people do not fly, poetry and prose. A striking example of this is the monologue of Katerina, the main heroine of Ostrovsky's play The Storm. What was the meaning of this despairing woman?

Why do not people fly like birds: only does Katerina regret about carefree girlhood?

The play "The Storm" deservedly is considered one of the most important works of the author. It is full of symbolism. That's Katerina's monologue, of course, you can take literally, thinking that a young woman still regrets that the time of a carefree youth will not return. But you can argue this way only if you do not read the entire work.

In fact, everything is much deeper! Asked why people do not fly like birds, Katerina, in fact, says that her soul has lost its power, and can no longer soar. If before she thanked God, because she had real happiness, simple and uncomplicated, today she is not that happy girl anymore. From this, Catherine is so hurt. It turns out that her world is falling apart!

A young woman says that before prayer and service in the church were her happiness, she did not notice the time, because her soul and thoughts were pure.

Once in the family of a spouse, she realizes that real life has little in common with her ideals. The husband is weak, his mother in law is a complex and not particularly kind person. But she has to adjust and tolerate ... And then in the life of Catherine appears Boris. As a result, the girl becomes even heavier, because even when she was very hard, she could turn to God, because she did not feel guilty. And now she is deprived of this, because she clearly understands that her love is sinful.

The interpretation of the heroine's reflections

That's how you can interpret the question of why people do not fly. The monologue of Katerina, in fact, is a reflection of why a person can not just take and go wherever he wants. And with whom he wants. The girl understands that they hold her, in principle, not the bonds of marriage. And not the opinion of others, but only confusion in her own soul. Therefore, it is necessary to blame for the death of Katerina, it turns out, not her husband, mother-in-law or beloved, who did not meet expectations. The whole reason is the life-style that has become obsolete, the model of upbringing, which was the basis of the life of a young woman, and which she simply had nothing to replace in her heart.

Are the questions asked why people do not fly like birds, our contemporaries?

Of course. But we are in a sense simpler. After all, there are so many different patterns of behavior and examples of destinies! Anyone who wants to find justification for his desire to "fly" (in other words, to break stereotypes), with a certain effort, can do it without breaking his soul to pieces.
