Where is the Leaning Tower of Pisa - the answer in its title, but many do not know it
Everyone knows about the location of the famous Eiffel Tower. But one of her friends - a similar structure, also located in Europe - is no less attentive. True, not everyone knows where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is located . And this despite the fact that the answer to this question lies in its very name, received on behalf of the town in which it is located. Of course, we are talking about Pisa. For lovers of Italy this place is well known.
An inclined belfry is the idea of architects?
Many believe that the falling tower in Italy appeared thanks to the fantasy of its creators. However, this is a delusion. Originally it was planned that the construction would be the highest in the city, after all the belfry was built. The tower was to be strictly vertical and complement the already functioning cathedral and baptistery. The majestic building of the temple appeared in the city in the XII century and was erected from white marble. His style became a trendsetter for many Tuscan cathedrals. The Baptistery holds the title of the world's largest baptismal font.
So the belfry, which later took some of the glory from its neighbors, was to complement the majestic architectural ensemble of the central square of the medieval city. The construction of the tower began at the end of the 12th century, but after the construction of the three tiers it became clear that the structure began to tilt. This confused its creators, and the work was stopped. Most likely, it was caused by a mistake in the design: under such a massive building laid inadequate deep foundation. Another version is the different soil density of the site. It is known that not only the tower, but all structures of the ensemble have a deviation from the vertical.
Anyway, but a rich medieval city, which was Pisa, it would be wrong to exist without a belfry, and the work resumed in 1275, that is, the break was almost ninety years. Three more floors were erected, the height of the tower was 48 meters, but an even larger slope again caused the architects to stop the work.
By the way, according to the original plan, the vertical dimension of the structure was ninety meters. So, coming to the city, it was possible not to know where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is, still it would not be difficult to find it. After all, even in modern Italy, buildings of this height must still be looked for.
With all the apparent lightness and airiness of the structure, the thickness of the walls of its base reaches 4.9 meters, which gives a serious load on the foundation. So the whole further history of the tower is a struggle for its preservation. After a while after the construction was completed, it was discovered that the slope of the tower was increasing. The first works aimed at stopping the increase in heels were conducted in the 18th century, then in the XIX. However, this did not lead to the desired result.
The situation was complicated by the fact that available ways to strengthen the tower could significantly spoil its appearance. The search for the solution took more than a decade, and in the twentieth century, too, several attempts were made, which continued in the new millennium. Finally, after large-scale works in 2002-2010, which attracted the best Italian and foreign architects, it was announced that the Tower of Pisa does not threaten anything. At the moment it is open for visits. So those who are able to overcome 294 steps, as a reward, can afford to enjoy a wonderful view of the city from above.
