From the life of the Monk Silouan

In the world of Silouan Athos was Semyon Ivanovich Antonov, who was born in 1866 in a simple peasant family. Since 16 years he worked as a joiner in the artel, which was in the estate of Prince Trubetskoi, near his village.

In his youth he wished to enter the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, but before that he had to fulfill his father's will. At his insistence, Semyon served in a sapper battalion in St. Petersburg. And after the service so much mired in the mundane life, entertainment and fun that I forgot about my good intentions.

On Athos Siluan arrived as a pilgrim only in 1892, entered the Russian Panteleimon Monastery and stayed on the Holy Mountain. In accordance with the Athonite customs, the new novice had to spend some time alone. This time was allotted to realize our sins and record them, in order to repent and confess them in the future. After 4 years, Semyon Antonov was tonsured as a monk and changed his worldly name to Siluan. And after spending several more years in monastic life, he accepted a celibacy.

In September 1938, after living in a monastery for 46 years from his 72nd, the Monk Siluan reposed, and was canonized only on November 26, 1987, but the believers turned to him for help even before that.
