What to do if the computer does not turn off via the "Start"

Personal computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone. Almost every person has at least one device from this list. Buying a new PC is always a significant event. It's nice to work for a laptop that quickly responds to requests, does not hang up and turns on and off in a timely manner.

But what if the computer does not turn off via the "Start". This is the standard way to disconnect a computer or laptop running on the Windows operating system. Regardless of which OS version is installed, the "Start" button has always been a faithful assistant.

But if the computer stopped turning off via the "Start", do not immediately panic and rush into the service center. To get started, it's best to get acquainted with the reasons that can cause a change in the PC's performance.

Installing updates

Among the most common reasons that the computer does not shut down via the "Start", there was and still is a laptop or computer system. Windows 7-10 are prone to frequent updates. During the use of the computer, the system downloads update packages that will be installed only after the work is completed.

In this case, shutting down through the Start menu will not work. The PC will not turn off, and an information window will appear on the screen informing you that the installation and application of updates are in progress.

When updating the operating system, pressing any keys will not help, and also the combination Ctrl + Alt + Delete. The laptop should be left to work and in no case shut off via the power button or pull the cord. This action can lead to incorrect operation of the OS.

To overcome the problem, in which the computer does not shut down through the "Start" during updates, you can. It is enough in the "Update Center" to refuse to automatically download and install.

Installation of new equipment

To create problems and slow down the operating system when shutting down can incomplete installation of new equipment. Finding and installing the appropriate driver can be delayed and cause the PC to not respond to the "Start".

Solve the problem only in two ways:

  • Close the installation window.
  • Wait until the process is complete.

Closing the program

At each shutdown, the operating system closes all running programs, including those running in the background. Accordingly, if the computer does not shut down through the "Start", Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10 can long close these programs.

Also on the laptop can be installed an application that the operating system can not close. If at least one of all processes does not respond, the standard computer shutdown will not yield results.

Solve the problem in one way: find a process that "slows down" the shutdown. To do this, go through the path: in the Control Panel, find the item "Administration", then select "Event Viewer".

In the Windows log, you should view two compartments: "System" and "Applications." If at least one of the processes is marked with an error message, then it must be disabled.

Also, the reason that the computer does not shut down via the "Start", and reboots, can be the programs that are downloaded when the operating system is launched. To change programs from the "Startup", you must enter a combination of Win + R, and in the pop-up window: msconfig. In the dialog box, select the "Startup" tab and disable all unnecessary programs.

This method will help not only to get rid of the problem, in which the computer does not shut down via the "Start". Windows 8, 7 and 10 will be much faster to boot at power on.

Changing power settings

Prevent slow shutdown and solve the problem, when the computer does not turn off via the "Start", you can by changing the power settings. Some may think that these actions will not lead to visible results and are suitable only for laptops. But it is the proper power settings that will help the laptop and PC to shut down more quickly.

First you need to go to "Device Manager". It's quite easy to turn this. First, hold down a few keys: Win + R. In the pop-up window, type: devmgmt.msc and press the enter button.

After that, the Device Manager opens. In this window, you need to open the root USB hub and disable the shutdown permission. After that, the personal computer or laptop will shut down significantly faster, and the risk of hangup when working with the Start menu will decrease.

Clean the registry

Cleaning the registry is designed for advanced PC users, since minor changes can disable the operating system.

To call the editor, you must enter Win + R \ regedit. In the sections that appear, find the ControlSession Manager. From the displayed list, select BootExecute and erase the data by typing autocheck autochk in the window.

Force shutdown

The last, most undesirable way to disconnect a computer or laptop when it hangs up is a cold shutdown. It is performed only if none of the methods described above has helped.

For a cold shutdown, you must hold the power button on the system unit or laptop. After a few seconds, the device completely turns off. However, with such a shutdown, the operating system files may suffer and the last changes in the work can not be saved.

Many users on whose PCs Windows 7, 8 and 10 are installed often encounter an unplanned hang of the operating system when the work is completed. Do not help neither cleaning the registry, nor changing the settings of startup.

You can solve this problem without referring to specialists, installing a clean operating system. It is enough to find the "Actions when closing the lid" in the "Control Panel" and select "Hibernation" instead of "Shutting down".
