What is celebrated in Russia on January 25: Student's Day or Tatyana's Day?

With the advent of the New Year holidays all the young people are looking forward to their holiday, where you can relax from the gray routine. It's about Student 's Day, which is also called Tatyana's Day. It is on January 25 that two holidays are celebrated: Tatyanin Day, Student's Day . Many are interested in the question of whether there are differences between them or is it the same holiday that has just two names? In this matter, we will try to understand!

The history of the Tatyana's day

Tatyana's day was celebrated on January 25 in Orthodox Russia from ancient times, this was preceded by the canonization of the holy martyrs Tatiana. The history of the holiday is deeply rooted in the history of the Roman Empire. Once in the family of the Roman consul, who secretly professed Christianity from all, a girl was born, who was decided to be called Tatyana. She was raised as a servant of God and the Church. When Tatyana reached the age of eighteen she decided not to marry, but to devote her life to the church completely, becoming a minister of the temple, in which she helped the destitute and sick people.

After a while, the persecution of Christians broke out in the Roman Empire with renewed force, and Tatiana was taken prisoner, where she was to be sacrificed to an idol. The girl began to pray. Soon her prayers were heard and Tatiana miraculously escaped from the sacrifice. But the girl's torment did not end. Later, the girl was tortured with whips, tried to burn, stabbed with knives, but she bravely endured all the suffering and, thanks to her faith and prayers, went to the martyrs absolutely healthy and unharmed. Everyone who caused Tatiana pain, died from the punishing hand of Christ. It is because of this that the Christian people Tatiana was recognized dead for the faith, and this day became a special church holiday.

Day of the student in Russia - how it all began

By the will of fate in 1755 on January 25, the great Empress of Russia Elizaveta Petrovna was created and signed a decree, which dealt with the foundation of the Moscow University. Since that time, this date has come to be considered the Day of all students, and Saint Tatiana became their patroness. And on January 25, the Student's Day is celebrated for more than 250 years.

The very same story of the signing of Elizaveta Petrovna decree on the establishment of the University began with the initiative of Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov, who at that time was a patron of philanthropy, a patron of collectors and scientists, and most importantly - a favorite of the Empress. It is known that Shuvalov was a close friend of Lomonosov, who influenced the choice of the city for the creation of the university. Among the arguments for founding an educational institution in Moscow was that there are many noblemen in this city who want to receive knowledge. And also that the visitors have relatives in Moscow who will provide them with housing, especially since at that time residence there was much cheaper than in other cities.

As a result, the Empress signed a decree and thereby opened a new class in the history of Russia - a class of students. At first, January 25, the Student's Day was celebrated only in Moscow, and it was considered a capital celebration. It was a day of mysterious unity, when science united many different people. By tradition, January 25, the student's day was celebrated cheerfully, the students used a lot of alcohol, but only on that day the police did not arrest them, but politely escorted them home. Despite the fact that the history of the appearance of the holiday is a thing of the past, traditions have survived in our days. All students gather in friendly companies and cheerfully celebrate it.

Officially, on January 25, the student's day was appointed by the President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin in 2006, after which he became a nation-wide one. The full name of this holiday sounds like this: Tatyana's Day is the Day of Russian Students.
