What is backup? How to make a backup on "Android"?

People who are somehow connected with IT, go a sad joke about the fact that users are divided into two types: those who make backup copies, and those who started them (!) Do. If you've never faced a complete loss of all your important documents or a collection of media files, then you will not understand humor. If faced, but could not be prevented, you will also not be in for a laugh.

Can I somehow prevent such an unpleasant incident? Of course! Only first you need to learn about what a backup is.

General information

This is the name for backing up important files (including system files). As you can understand, this is done for their protection in case of OS defeat by virus or critical equipment failure. Backup can be done both in manual mode and with the help of specialized programs.

In the first case, you can copy important system files to some protected storage, while the utility can save even the whole operating system.

And what is "Bacup", if you translate this name from English? The term originated from the English word backup, which can be translated as "stock". However, with the same success it can mean something like "backup" or "duplicating". Thus, this term means the preservation of important information on a third-party medium.

By the way, our ancestors knew perfectly well what a backup is! True, they did not call this process. Do you know that all the manuscripts corresponded? The fact is that in ancient times enemies loved to burn libraries, and therefore to keep all the books in one place and one copy would be just silly. Of course, various kinds of moneylenders also mastered the backup, keeping lists of their debtors in several copies.

When to backup?

Returning to the topic of sayings and proverbs, you should once again recall the uselessness of drinking mineral water at a time when your kidneys are no longer working ... Simply put, you need to keep all your working documents constantly! Even if you do not store on your computer something incredibly important, configured and working without glitches OS - in itself important information.

Thus, before you decide to try some interesting program, it is desirable to make a backup copy of the system or important files that affect its performance.

It's easy to guess that before a complete reinstallation of the OS it is desirable to transfer all your collections of movies and music to a spare hard drive. Installation programs today work almost impeccably, but it's never a problem to be safe in such a matter.

Where can I save a backup?

There are two main ways to reliably save your data from damage or total loss: on a physical medium or in a "cloud". Let's consider all the methods in more detail, we will point out their strengths and weaknesses.

Recording to an external drive

Since the capacity of external storage devices today can exceed several Tb, you can easily record on such a disk not only some important files, but even a huge archive of photos and videos. The advantage of this method is not only the huge capacity of the media, but also its mobility. The only serious drawback is the possibility of losing data due to strong mechanical influences on the disk. To avoid this, purchase more reliable enclosures.

Flash-card

If you want to save only some system files, then for this purpose quite enough and flash drives. They are cheap, each year their capacity only grows, there are no problems with the drivers, and mechanical reliability at altitude. Moreover, even getting into the water most often does not harm those files that are recorded there.

The disadvantage is that the flash drives quite often fail, and there are simply no utilities that could warn about the probability of such an event. This is especially true for cheap Chinese models. The write speed is very low, and the data storage time is also limited.

Putting a flash drive in a desk drawer for six months, you can quite find out that it is nothing. Especially this affects the storage of large volumes, where up to now have not learned how to effectively combat the leakage of charge.

CDs

Despite the anachronism of this kind of carriers, in some cases they are simply irreplaceable. Of course, we do not encourage you to use CD-blobs at 700 MB, but DVD-9, with a capacity of almost 9 GB, can be a good way out. Keep in mind that the recorded discs should be protected from temperature fluctuations, exposure to sunlight and mechanical defects.

If we talk about acceptable reliability and capacity, then it's the DVD that proved to be the best. CD blanks are extremely reliable and durable, but 700 MB by today's times are just ridiculous. Blu-ray discs are very capacious (30 GB or more), but the drives for their recording and reading are not in every computer. In addition, they are very sensitive to surface damage.

"Clouds"

This topic in recent years has become simply incredibly popular. So what is a backup in the "cloud"? This is the copying of the necessary files to third-party servers that specialize in providing a certain amount of free space for a fee or free of charge.

The most famous "clouds" are services from Dropbox, Google Drive and Yandex Disc. For example, in Google Drive completely free of charge issue as much 15 GB of free space, which is quite enough for most home users.

How to create a backup copy of Windows?

If you ever had the dubious happiness of working with Windows 98 / Me, then remember well about their "fallibility". More precisely, the systems were quite good for themselves, but at the slightest inconsistencies in compatibility with some programs and devices were able to go into a deep "faint", which had all the chances to end reinstalling the OS.

Fortunately, in newer versions of Microsoft, there is a built-in backup mechanism. In Vista / 7/8 it was brought to a pretty decent state. Consider a backup of Windows 7. Make it simple.

Click on the "Start" button, find the "Control Panel" item there. In the dialog that appears, search for "Backup and Restore." Click on the link with the left mouse button, and in the dialog box that opens, select the "Create system image" item.

The working window will open again, in which you can choose three options at once for saving the image: on the hard disk, on a CD / DVD disc, on the network. Select the checkbox for the preferred item, then click on "OK". If the connection to the Internet is poor, then trying to save an image on the network may fail.

Of course, all the same can be done with the help of third-party copy utilities. The most famous are the products from Acronis, Norton Ghost. At home, the functionality of the specialized programs from the Nero package will also be quite sufficient. Their drawback is that all these utilities are paid.

Of course, if you need increased reliability, it's better to pay. But home users will have even standard Windows tools.

Mobile devices

All of the above is more or less familiar to anyone who has worked on the computer for any length of time. But what should the owners of popular tablets and smartphones do today?

After all, these devices today store a lot of extremely important information, which you absolutely do not want to lose. Since today the mobile OS "Android" is the most widespread, let's talk about gadgets under its control.

So how do I backup an android device? In advance, we stipulate that we will not copy common pictures and videos, but programs and settings. If all this is lost, then it takes more than an hour to restore all the information.

First, let's look at an example of the remarkable Titanium Backup utility. With it, you can easily save absolutely all the files and settings of the mobile OS "Android". This is extremely important, since a phone's backup is often able to save your personal data and application settings for Internet banking. It is not necessary to say how it can help out.

What do I need to backup?

For this, only two things are needed:

  • Make a Root. Of course, occasionally come across smart phones and tablets, which are already "rutovany" the manufacturer, but in most cases you will have to do it yourself;
  • Titanium Backup Utility.

What is Root for?

And why can not you simply copy important data without resorting to such tricks? The fact is that the OS from Google is "open" only in words. In fact, it happens that the user does not have full access to the file system of his own device. Moreover, there are no extended rights even for many programs, and therefore without Root-rights, it will not be possible to manage.

Titanium Backup Overview

Now let's talk about the program Titanium Backup. There are paid and free versions, and for ordinary users there is enough free software.

A little about its installation

If you put the program from a memory card, do not forget to set the option in the device settings that it allows. The installation itself does not take much time. After the first start, the utility will ask you for root privileges. Do not forget to click on the "Allow" button, at the same time putting the "Remember" checkbox.

We remind you that the program's capabilities are quite enough to disable your device, so carefully read the comments to each menu, do not click on all the buttons in a row.

Create a backup copy

And now we will learn how to make a backup of an android smartphone or tablet. Once again we remind: in any case do not use any options, if absolutely do not know about their purpose. So, the utility started. What to do next?

At the top of the working window of the program there is a button "Backup copies". After clicking it, the "Backup" dialog box opens. There should be an item about full copying of user data, programs and settings. Opposite him there is a "Start" button, which you need to click on.

A dialog box appears in which the user can select the programs that he wants to save. Click on the button "Start batch processing applications." It remains only to wait for the Android backup. The time of copying directly depends on the number of installed programs and the power of your device.

After the completion of the process, you will be thrown back to the window, where there will be a complete list of all the backups created. Look at the notation on the right: if there are no exclamation points anywhere, then everything went well. If they are, then something went wrong during the copying process.

Very often this happens when you incorrectly got Root-rights. We can not talk about this process in detail, since it varies for each type of smartphone or tablet, but we want to caution against the use of questionable programs "rut in a single click." As a rule, they can not do anything sensible.

What to do in case of data loss?

And how to restore the backup by deploying it on the device, if some trouble still happened?

It is not difficult to do this. Again go to the "Processing" item, click on the "Restore" item. A dialog box opens, in which it's better to immediately select the "Restore all data software" item, so that your phone or tablet returns to a fully operational state that was lost due to some external reasons.

However, sometimes you may need to restore a backup of one program. To do this, go to the "Backups" section, then mark it with a check mark. After that, click on the "Restore" button, and then wait for a while.

What other backup software exists?

A good alternative to the above application is the program for backup TWRP Recovery. It has a fairly simple and ascetic interface, but it's worthy of functionality. In addition, the menu of this utility will quickly understand even not too experienced user.

In the first dialog box, just click on the Backup button, and then go to the backup menu. Mark the checkboxes for all the items we are interested in, then click on the Swipe to Back Up button.

When making a backup of the tablet, it's best to choose Dropbox as the place to save important data (its support goes out of the box) or the hard drive of the computer. We recommend choosing these media due to the large size of the resulting image, which simply can not fit on the device's memory card.

To restore the system from a previously created copy, you need to click the Restore button in the main program window. As in the previous case, it is possible to restore both the entire system as a whole and some programs by putting the checkboxes next to their names.

As you can see, creating a backup with the help of this utility can not be called such a complex operation.

Finally, we note the remarkable program Helium. Like her "ancestor" from the Periodic System, the utility is extremely light and simple. The interface is fully Russified, so there is no need for additional hints on its development. Before you make a backup of the firmware with it, you will also have to get Root-rights for full access to the file system of the device.
