Watermelons in greenhouses: proper cultivation

Watermelons are light and shade plants. Therefore, growing them in a greenhouse is more than advisable. This method can be acceptable both in the central part of Russia and in Siberia. Watermelons in greenhouses, as well as in the open ground, are best grown by planting seedlings. This is the most acceptable option. The fact is that in May at night the air temperature may be insufficient for a good growth of this culture, even in a greenhouse.

Seedlings are planted about a month before the transfer to the ground, no later than May 1-2. Soil mixture for it should consist of one part of the vegetable garden and three parts of humus. When sowing, the seeds of watermelon are laid on their sides. This will facilitate the germination of cotyledons. Deepen them into the soil by 3 cm. When caring for seedlings, one must take into account that a lack of illumination will lead to its strong stretching.

Planting watermelon in a greenhouse can be produced next to other crops - tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. In spring, the bed should be dug up and fertilized with manure. The most suitable for the cultivation of this crop are sandy loams and sandy soils. On clay get a good harvest will not work. Under the bushes dig holes. When planting, make sure that the roots of the watermelon do not come into contact directly with the manure.

Watermelons in greenhouses are often infected with a spider mite. At the first signs of its appearance, plants must be treated with appropriate drugs. Not unsuitable for this purpose and the usual ash ash. The harvest in the greenhouse depends, first of all, on how well the watermelon variety is selected. It is best to choose early maturing plants.

Watermelons in greenhouses, like any melons, are not afraid of drying out, but they do not tolerate excess water at all. Therefore, you need to pay attention to such an important indicator as humidity. Ideally, it should not be above 60%. With a sharp drop in the temperature of the air on the street, seedlings need to be covered.

The formation of watermelon in the greenhouse will be faster if the plant is watered not with ordinary water, but using a solution of any nitrogen fertilizer. It must necessarily be warm. Do this carefully so as not to fall on the leaves and stems. After ten days of growth in the greenhouse, the bushes will need to be tied up. Of great importance is also the procedure, such as the formation of plants. Those shoots on which the ovaries appear are pricked, leaving no more than two leaflets above the fruit.

The main stage in harvesting gourds can be called tying fruit. Fruits are placed in a grid and suspended at a short distance from the ground. This must be done after they have reached the size of the apple. Watermelons in greenhouses, as in the open ground, are removed from the bush only when a characteristic sound appears when you tap on the fruit.

If all of the above recommendations are followed, it will be easy to get an excellent harvest of this crop in the greenhouse, diversifying its table with tasty and useful fruits. Cultivation of this culture is a simple matter, but requires a responsible approach. We must also take into account the fact that the greenhouse itself should not be shaded by trees and buildings, since watermelons need a large amount of light in the formation.
