"Victory" GAZ-M72 - the pride of the Soviet automotive industry

Listen to how proudly it sounds - "Victory". In the history of the creation of this legendary Soviet car GAZ M 72 played its role Nikita Khrushchev. In 1954, he proposed to modernize the GAZ-69. That is, the machine was supposed to become more comfortable. As a result, the secretaries of the rural regional committees of the CPSU, as well as the chairmen of the advanced collective farms, were able to get official off-road vehicles. But the military also had an interest in this car. So, the comfortable and highly-passable GAZ-M 72, whose photo you see in front of you, became a "general's" one. And at the leisure the government elite ridden on "Victory" and in their hunting farms.

In the spring of 1954, GAZ officially received a technical assignment. G. Wasserman, the creator of GAZ-67 and GAZ-69, was appointed the lead designer. Besides him, a whole department of specialists worked on the future government car. All of them in due time were engaged in creation of GAZ-69. Therefore, all the subtleties of this machine they were known.

So what did the designers do? The new car received a load-bearing body frame and panels from the GAZ-M-20, but these details were modified. The transfer box displaced the transverse box-shaped body amplifier and the longitudinal amplifier. The latter had to be abandoned altogether. To compensate for these power elements and to increase the lateral and longitudinal stiffness of the body, more roof rails and door racks have been introduced. GAZ-M72, in contrast to the GAZ-M-20, received a new sub-engine frame. It was specially designed to fasten the spring suspension of the front axle.

The GAZ-M72 has parts from the 69th model. This is a modernized front axle and transfer case. And the gearbox is quite standard, from the GAZ-M-20. The rear axle was specially designed for the new Victory. To increase the ground clearance, the springs were installed on the beams of the bridges.

The body was equipped as in the 20th model of "Victory": the upholstery of the cabin is soft, there is a heater, a clock, a dual-band radio receiver. Therefore, this car embodied the concept of comfortable SUVs. It must be said that they did not even think about mass production of such machines abroad.

Equipped GAZ-M72 transfer case, which had a demultiplikator and disengaged leading front axle. Wheels put 16-inch, with enlarged grousers. This provided good cross-country ability in snow, sand, mud and broken roads.

As well as it is necessary to the governmental and military off-road car, the car should pass tests. The car showed a good "survivability" of the units and the body. Also, excellent characteristics of patency were noted. In the summer of 1956, three journalists on the new "Victory" made a run on the route Moscow-Vladivostok. This distance (15 thousand kilometers) GAZ-M-72 passed without serious breakdowns. From those far years before we got newsreels, in which Nikita Khrushchev, along with Fidel Castro, go on this car for winter hunting.

In June of the 55th the first test GAZ-M72 came off the assembly line, and a year later a serious release started. The car did not become mass and "came out" in small series from 1955 to 1958. When the release of GAZ-M-20 Pobeda cars was completed, the assembly of the new GAZ-M72 also ceased.
