Victor Hugo "Notre Dame Cathedral". Summary

The work of Victor Hugo "Notre Dame de Paris" (short content read on) is one of the most beloved among lovers of classical literature. Based on his motives, films are shot and performances are staged, and the rock opera of the same name was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful in 1998-99. And who will not be affected by this tragic story?

If you have not yet read the novel of the French writer Notre Dame de Paris, a brief summary, hopefully, will prompt you to do this, since in a short article it is impossible to convey the drama that this sad history is permeated with. The action takes place in 1482. It all starts with the fact that in the palace of Justice gathered a huge crowd, waiting for the festive mystery, the author of which was the poet Pierre Gringoire. However, everything went not according to plan, and the mystery, without having time to start, smoothly turns into a frank farce, calling to elect the king of buffoons (or the buffoon pope). Everyone wishing to receive this "post" should make the most terrible grimace. The people are mad and foolish, but the main prize - the clowning tiara - goes to the local hunchbacked bell ringer, Quasimodo, who accidentally ended up on this "celebration of life" and did not make a grimace, for it was already ugly. Victor Hugo (Notre Dame de Paris is considered one of his best creations) described these events in a very colorful manner.

Suddenly a cry was heard in the crowd that Esmeralda was dancing on the square - a beautiful gypsy. Everyone ran to look at this wonderful sight. The grieved Gringoire also went to look at her. But he was not the only one who was captivated by the beauty of the young girl: the priest Claude Frollo literally inflamed her passion and, by all means, decided to achieve its location. When the girl was going home, he, along with Quasimodo, tried to kidnap her, but Gringoire followed her and called for help. She is rescued by the dazzling soldier Phoebus de Chateaubert. Gypsy Esmeralda sincerely falls in love with him, but he has a bride, blond Fleur-de-Lys. The literary masterpiece "Notre Dame de Paris", the summary of which is unable to retell all the details, really touches the soul.

Further the plot develops as follows: Esmeralda saves Gringoire from hanging, agreeing to become his wife. But she loves Phoebus, who once appoints her a date, as she is subdued by the beauty of the girl. But Frollo found out about this, and the moment he tried to kiss the gypsy, he thrust a dagger into his back. Esmeralda fainted. When she wakes up, she hears the charges of killing Phoebus. She is threatened with a gallows. Frollo invites her to flee, but with the condition that she will be his. The girl refuses. He tortures her with a "Spanish boot", and Esmeralda does not stand it: she confesses everything she did not do. She does not know that he is alive. On the day of execution she sees him and faints. Quasimodo, who also was a victim of the conspiracy, picks her up in her arms and runs away with her to the Cathedral of Notre Dame (a brief summary conceals a lot of interesting details). Some time the gypsy lives there, but her brethren - thieves and beggars - storm the temple to rescue the girl. Quasimodo defends her, he loved Esmeralda when she gave him a drink on the day of his "coronation."

Gringoire, knowing that Frollo wants to kill her, takes the girl out of the cathedral and passes it to the priest. He again arranges execution and watches its implementation, standing on top of the tower of the cathedral and angrily staggering. Quasimodo understands that it is the priest who is to blame for the fact that the innocent girl was cruelly executed. He throws it from the tower, and the lifeless body of Esmeralda takes and carries to the Cathedral of Notre Dame (the summary will never convey the whole drama of the situation and the desperation of the main characters). There he puts the dead girl on the floor, hugs her and dies.
