VAZ-2114, camshaft sensor: device, operating principle and possible malfunctions

In the car VAZ-2114 the camshaft sensor plays an important role. For the precise injection and ignition, there are many devices that are connected by means of an electronic control unit. The more sensors in the engine systems, the better it will work, the gasoline consumption and higher power will be less. For the first time on the model VAZ-2114 the camshaft sensor was installed in 2007. Before this we did without it. But what is the advantage of using it? This question should be studied in more detail.

What is a camshaft sensor?

The camshaft position sensor , which VAZ-2114 possesses, is a device that monitors the condition of the valves (open or closed). It is also called the phase sensor. This designation is also correct. Therefore, it can also be used. The device is installed as an eight-valve motors (with one camshaft) and 16-valve (with two camshafts). His work is based on the Hall effect - in the same way as in the non-contact ignition distributors. Only other functions have a camshaft sensor (VAZ-2114). Symptoms of the problem will be discussed below.

There are teeth on the camshaft. The distance between them is the same. But in one place two teeth are not enough. And at the moment when this pass is in front of the phase sensor, the piston in the first cylinder is located either at the bottom or at the top, dead center. And at this moment, a signal is sent to the electronic control unit, which contains a certain algorithm. Due to this, the microcontroller understands that the piston of the first cylinder is in one of the extreme positions.

Read signal

A signal is a current pulse that is understood by the control unit. However, the ECU captures two states: whether it is there or not. It is for the development of a pulse on the VAZ-2114 sensor camshaft and installed. The microcontroller processes the pulse and compares it with all the data that was obtained from other similar devices. Then there is a construction of a kind of three-dimensional graphics, which is superimposed on the fuel card. In the case of mismatch, adjustments are made for various ignition or injection parameters.

Of course, the graph is built only inside the controller, and you can visualize it only if you connect the control unit to the diagnostic equipment. Correction occurs continuously, while the engine is running. It should be noted that carburetor motors were not equipped with such devices. For the first cars VAZ-2114 the camshaft sensor was not installed, as well as on their predecessors - VAZ-2109.

How to determine the breakdown of DF?

But how do you understand that the camshaft sensor has failed? Faults, VAZ-2114 encountered, associated with readers, have very similar symptoms. When the engine is unstable, it starts to "troyte", and the onboard computer shows an increased gasoline consumption. These symptoms are inherent in many breakdowns. Speaking specifically about the phase sensor, you must receive the error code: 0340 or 0343. The figures indicate that the camshaft position sensor is faulty or there is an open in its circuit.

The engine control unit does not receive a signal from the DF. Therefore, the ignition timing is not adjusted . The scheme of the engine is changed. The control unit starts working on an alternative, "emergency" fuel card. It excludes the signals of one or another sensor. Similarly, the electronic control unit also behaves when a lambda probe (oxygen sensor) fails .

Visual inspection

As a rule, in most cases, a visual inspection of the VAZ-2114 car is enough. The camshaft sensor can even be checked. Many drivers do not look under the hood, so often they break wires, destroy the body of the device, etc. Before starting the repair, make sure that the failure is fatal and only replacement is necessary. This work takes place in several stages:

  1. First of all, inspect the phase sensor. Look for mechanical damage on it. If there are cracks, chips, immediately change the device.
  2. Examine the contacts that make the connection. If there is rust or moisture on them, remove it. Check operation. Very often the cause of poor performance is the lack of contact or moisture on the plugs. The same goes for oxidation.
  3. Check the wiring for breaks and shorts.

Replacement: general moments

Unfortunately, a visual inspection can not give an exact answer to the question of why the phase sensor does not work. For this reason, it is necessary to disassemble the engine in order to get to the device and conduct its diagnostics (and replacement). All types of motors have common actions. But how to check the camshaft sensor (VAZ-2114)? Here's what you need to do:

  • Remove the negative terminal from the battery. This will ensure safety during work.
  • Prepare the tool: keys, screwdrivers, heads and ratchet.

That's all, you can start repair.

Replacement with 8-valve motors

The procedure looks like this:

  1. Find the location of the device: at the top of the motor, to the right of the air filter housing.
  2. The camshaft sensor is fixed with one bolt. Unscrew it with a key for 10.
  3. Extract DF.
  4. In the hole under the sensor, stick a clean cloth to prevent dust and dirt from entering.
  5. Perform a visual inspection of the device.
  6. If there is a lot of dirt on the sensor surface, remove it. Try to test it in work by setting it in place. If it does not help, you will need to replace the sensor.
  7. Even if the installation of the new device did not work, and the error still occurs, the reason lies in the fact that the gear shifted on the camshaft. And we need a new similar part, and not a camshaft sensor (VAZ-2114). By the way, its price is about 300 rubles.
  8. If the error occurred after the replacement (break) of the timing belt, then, most likely, during installation, it was moved to several teeth. Disassemble the timing case and check the labels.

The phase sensor on a 16-valve motor

The whole procedure is similar in general, but there are also differences:

  • Located on the car VAZ-2114 phase sensor under the duct, near the first camshaft.
  • Remove the radiator grille.
  • Unscrew the two DF fastening bolts using a 10-mm head and an extension piece.
  • Make sure that the contacts are clean and not damaged.
  • If there are defects, install a new device.
  • Do not use sealant or gaskets. The installation site is very aggressive environment. There constantly occur temperature changes.

At this repair is over. After installing a new sensor, the engine starts working in the ideal mode, the gasoline consumption returns to the previous level, the detonation and "trochanie" disappear. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the eight-valve motors are slightly easier to replace - there is no need to dismantle the grille. After completing the repair, be sure to check the operation of the engine with the help of diagnostic scanners.
