The most powerful engine in the world. Engine Manufacture

Companies involved in shipping sometimes order such powerful mechanisms as supertankers and container carriers. For them, more and more powerful installations are needed, including (and occupies a most important place) the motor. The most powerful engine in the world today is produced in Finland, in a company called Wartsila. It is a diesel combustion engine with a capacity of up to 100,000 kW.

About company

Wartsila is one of the largest companies producing ship motors of record capacity. Since the 90s of the last century, she began developing linear marine engines, called Wartsila-Sulzer-RTA96-C. It is a two-stroke and the most powerful engine in the world.

Individual models of the ruler have a similar design. The difference is in the number of cylinders. The customer can choose a variant of the unit with the presence of 6 to 14 cylinders.

Cylinders and their number

To understand the grandiose nature of the design, you can imagine that the diameter of one cylinder alone is 960 millimeters, and the stroke of the piston is 2.5 meters. As for the working volume of the part, it has 1820 liters. More than 100 container carriers are equipped with such units, on which 8 to 20 cylinders are installed. Such ships, capable of carrying cargo up to 10,000 tons, can safely develop a speed above 46 kilometers per hour.

For the first time this most powerful engine in the world, having 11 cylinders, was built in 1997. The company was the Japanese Diesel United. And after 5 years in Finland announced that it is possible to produce a unit with 14 cylinders. It is this motor that remains today a record.

The most powerful engine in the world

This model has 108,920 horsepower. The working volume of the generator reaches 25 480 liters.

At first glance, a low liter capacity might seem strange: on 1 liter it is about 4.3 "horses". If you take the most powerful engine in the world on a car, you will find that in it designers have learned to get well above 100 horsepower. But in the case of the ship's unit, such a low figure was chosen for a reason. The engine works here slowly - at maximum power the shaft speed is only 102 rpm (for comparison: on automobile diesel engines, from 3000 to 5000 rpm is observed). Due to this, a good gas exchange is achieved in the marine diesel. And if you add to this the low speed of the piston, you will get a very good efficiency.

Under any regime, the specific fuel consumption varies from 118 to 126 grams per horse per hour. This is more than two times lower than that of passenger diesels.

Comparing with car aggregates, it should be added that heavy marine diesel fuel is used on ships, which has at times a lower energy content.

So, the weight of the 14-cylinder unit is 2300 tons without taking into account the various technical fluids. Only one crankshaft weighs about 300 tons. In length, this best diesel engine reaches a mark of 26.7 meters, and in height - up to 13.2 meters.

Each cylinder has a huge valve. Another 3 similar small parts, which play the role of injectors in automotive units, serve to inject fuel into the cylinder.

The valve is exhaust. Exhaust gases from it are sent to the collector, and then to the turbochargers. The latter drive the air to the windows cut out at the bottom of the cylinder, which open when the piston is at the bottom dead center.

The force from the piston is transmitted to the crankshaft by means of a crosshead device, which increases the operation of the diesel engine.

The main materials, from which the details of the ship's engine are made , are all the same cast iron and steel.

Prospects

Meanwhile, designers do not stop at their already impressive results. Apparently, for them the answer to the question of which engine is better is obvious. The one that is to be created. There are already rumors about the development of an 18-cylinder diesel for ships.

For now, you can summarize the most impressive characteristics of the 14-cylinder version of the engine:

  • Weight without regard to fuels and lubricants is 2300 tons;
  • The length of the unit is 27 meters;
  • Height - 13.4 meters;
  • The greatest power achieved at 102 rpm is 108,920 horsepower;
  • Fuel consumption - over 6283 liters per hour of operation.
