The main sights of Kharkov

Kharkov, being the largest Ukrainian commercial and scientific and industrial center, without claiming to be a tourist city, nevertheless, is of considerable interest to the guests of the city. The Kharkiv region as a whole is rich in places that have a huge historical value and are integral parts of the national culture. The main sights of Kharkov are its "seven miracles".   • Gosprom building

The House of State Industry, erected in just three years (1926-1928), which became the first skyscraper of the former Soviet Union (according to other sources, Europe), is considered to be the symbol of Kharkov, a monument of architecture of constructivism. At that time, construction was organized according to advanced technologies, based on the "floating formwork" method. The erected solid reinforced concrete monolith shot up 63 meters. Later, after in 1955 the first TV tower was erected on the building, the total height was 108 meters. The extraordinary strength of this reinforced concrete massif was confirmed when the German invaders tried to blow it up, but the monolithic structures did not even crack. It is worth noting that before the reconstruction in 2003, the building of the State Industry Committee belonged to the world monuments of architecture protected by UNESCO.

  • Complex of the Assumption Cathedral

Continues the list of "Sights of Kharkov" and simultaneously refers to one of the "Seven Wonders of the City" - the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The height of the bell tower of the Assumption Cathedral, built in the XIX century, is 89.5 meters. For over 150 years since the construction, the building was considered to be the highest not only in the city, but in all of Russia. Nowadays the building occupies the 9th place among the highest belfries of the world and is one of the high-rise buildings of the city.

  • Monument to Taras Shevchenko

In addition, that this monument refers to the "seven wonders of Kharkov", it is deservedly named the best monument to the Kobzar in the whole world and added to the list "Sights of Kharkov". A single ensemble forms a monumental structure to the greatest Ukrainian poet TG Shevchenko in combination with the Kharkov architecture and landscapes in the garden of the same name, located in the central part of the city. The opening of the sculpture in the style of the Stalinist "baroque" in combination with socialist realism took place in 1935. That is why the personality of Taras Shevchenko was interpreted in the light of Soviet times, as an ideological fighter for the bright future of the common people, prose writer, poet-revolutionary. The height of the Kobzar is 4.5 meters, the total monument is over 16 meters.

  • The Cathedral of the Annunciation

Interesting places in Kharkov include an architectural ensemble with a bell tower, rising to 75 meters, which is decorated in a new Byzantine style and impresses with its grandeur. The history of the construction dates back to 1655, at that time over the river. Lopan was built a wooden church, in 1888 the construction of a new Cathedral of the Annunciation was started at the expense of local nobility and ordinary parishioners. And in 1901 the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos was erected . The richness of the decor and the special "striped" masonry distinguish the five-domed temple, which has a high bell tower, among other landmarks of the city.

  • Complex "Mirror Stream"

The visiting card of Kharkov is the "Mirror Stream" fountain, built in 1947, located opposite the Opera Theater in Victory Square. Its construction marked the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. The legend says that the decision to create a fountain by the city authorities was made after Khrushchev's visit to the city, as a result of which he was dissatisfied with the view opened from the obkomov windows. The original name of the fountain-gazebo is "Glass Stream". The last reconstruction was carried out in 2007.

  • House with a spire

Another one of the "seven wonders of Kharkov" is a residential building located on Sq. Constitution, 2. Its construction continued from 1954 to 1967. The house is decorated in the style of "Empire" of Stalin's times and became a memorable architectural decoration of the city. Project architect P.I. Areshkin.

  • Intercession Cathedral

Pokrovsky Monastery is the most ancient construction of the city and originates in the XVII century, as it was part of the system of strengthening the Kharkov Fortress. That is why the bell tower of the Intercession Cathedral (erected in 1689) looks like a defensive tower. The icon of the Holy Face of the Savior adorns the entrance gate of the monastery.

Many interesting places of Ukraine are located in Kharkov, except for historical sights the city has a huge number of various monuments of the present, as well as built in the recent past, nevertheless of considerable interest for tourists.
