The DNS server does not respond: what to do in this situation?

Not often, of course, but sometimes users try to access Internet sites that the browser installed on the system gives a message that the DNS server is not responding. What to do to eliminate the problem, not every user knows, but meanwhile there are several simplest solutions, which will be discussed further.

Why do I need DNS servers?

To start a little theory. What is a DNS server? In fact, it is a kind of interpreter, which makes it possible to convert numerical addresses of Internet resources into letter symbols of domain names.

This saves the user from the complicated procedure of memorizing and entering the resource address in a numerical expression. It's too uncomfortable. Many people know that today an address is entered in the line consisting of letters, numbers and other symbols with the addition in the form of domain ownership, which looks much easier in practice.

Possible operational problems

Now let's look at some problems, when for some reason the DNS server does not respond. What to do to troubleshoot, it becomes clear if you look at the causes of the failure.

Typically, among all that may cause a failure, call provider problems, incorrectly configured TCP / IP settings, the impact of viruses, spontaneous change of parameters from specific software, and so on.

DNS server does not respond: what to do (Windows 7)?

The first thing to do when such problems occur is to check the DNS client activity. To do this, use the services section, which can be accessed by entering the services.msc command in the "Run" menu (Win + R).

Here you need to find a line indicating the DNS client and look at the type of launch used. The value must be set to automatic. If something else is set, the parameter will have to be changed, by calling the right-click menu, where the property string is selected.

But this is not all that can fix the situation if the DNS server does not respond. What should I do if I receive a message? It is necessary to check the correctness of TCP / IPv4 parameters (this protocol is used most often). To do this, you need to log in to the network properties section from the network management section. Then call the window for changing adapter properties, specify the required connection and use the connection properties, where you will need to find the appropriate protocol.

When you call its properties, you should look at the settings. In most cases, the provider provides automatic value assignment services, but sometimes they need to be manually registered. In the lines of the preferred and alternative DNS servers, you just need to enter the correct values and save the configuration changes.

The DNS server does not respond: what should I do? Rostelecom

However, even after this, the problem may not disappear. In particular, this concerns the provider "Rostelecom", which provides its own parameters for customization. But they also may not work, and the system will issue a warning again that the DNS server is not responding. What to do in this case? Use a different (alternative) configuration.

For example, you can reconfigure access by specifying the DNS servers for Google services. To do this, in the properties of the above protocol in the server value rows, you need to enter the following parameters: for the preferred one - two digits 8 and two digits 4, for the alternative - four digits 8. There is nothing wrong with changing the values for the alternate and preferred server.

Finally, if this option does not work, you can do a complete reset and update the configuration. To do this, use the command line launched at the administrator level, in which the ipconfig / flushdns command is first written, then ipconfig / registerdns, then ipconfig / release, and finally ipconfig / renew. After entering each line, the Enter key is pressed.

Conclusion

It remains to add that at least one of the above solutions will solve problems with DNS settings. However, there were no issues related to the virus impact or that some types of software that require constant access to the network can change their configuration spontaneously (for example, with a permanent license check). Here it is necessary to use completely different methods.
