Sights of Ternopil and Ternopil region: photo, reviews

In the center of Podillia, at the intersection of important trails and railways, there is a cozy city of Ternopil. The sights of one of the main centers of Galicia are not as popular as Lviv's. But there is a lot of interesting and beautiful here. No less attractive natural and historical and cultural monuments are beyond its borders: on the territory of Ternopil region.

Ternopil is a city of unexpected discoveries

A lot of pleasant discoveries are prepared for the traveler Ukrainian Ternopil. The sights of the city are not only numerous architectural monuments, but also interesting museums, green parks and original restaurants.

Ternopil was founded in the middle of the 16th century by Polish tycoon Jan Tarnovsky. During his history he visited part of many states: Poland, the Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary, ZUNR, the Soviet Union. The patron of his city the Ternopilians consider Saint Teklyu.

Ternopil is located on the Podolsky Upland, in the zone of deciduous forests. The area around the city is strongly dissected, hilly. Elevation differences within Ternopil reach 75 meters. Through the city, the Seret River flows (the left tributary of the Dniester).

All travelers and visitors of the city are surprised by the variety and beauty of Ternopil's many attractions. Photos and descriptions of the most important monuments and tourist sites in the city you will find in the following sections of the article.

Castle and lake

The main object for recreation and leisurely walks in the city is the so-called Ternopilsky stan. This is the largest urban artificial lake in Europe, the area of which is about 300 hectares. It is believed that it was created back in 1540 by Jan Tarnovsky.

In 2015, the reconstruction of the embankment along the lake ended. Here today you can see bicycle paths, sculptures and green spaces. A small boat cruises along the lake tirelessly for tourists and holidaymakers. On the lake there is also the "Island of Lovers", you can get to it on a specially equipped bridge-crossing.

Above the embankment there is a massive yellow castle building erected in 1540. Actually, the construction of the city began with him. It was intended to defend the southeastern Polish borders from the periodic raids of the Tatars and Turks. The last still managed to storm the fortress in 1675. Then they destroyed most of the castle fortifications.

In 1944, the Ternopil castle was destroyed by the Red Army in the battle with the Nazis. After the war, only one of the buildings of the defensive complex was preserved. In the 50's it was restored. Today it houses a sports school and a restaurant.

Monuments of sacral architecture

Sights of Ternopil are numerous monuments of architecture, including five monuments of national importance. Among them - three temple structures: the Dominican Church, the Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Native Church.

Dominican church with cells - a unique monument of sacred architecture of the XVIII century. It was built in the Baroque style on the design of architect Augusta Moshinsky. During the hostilities in 1944, the structure was badly damaged. The church was rebuilt in 1957, and in 2015, its clock was installed on its tower - an exact copy of the pre-war.

Under the Dominican Church there are ancient underground tunnels laid out of stone and bricks. Historians argue that they lead to a castle on the shore of the lake and other locations of the city.

The oldest temple in Ternopil is the Church of the Nativity of Christ, which is located on Russkaya Street. It was built in 1608 from a stone for 1916 zł. Fortunately, the building was not damaged during the Second World War.

If you go west along Russkaya Street, you can go to another ancient Ternopil temple. This is the so-called Extension Church (it is located right above the city stava). The temple was built in the late 16th century in the Renaissance style. In the 1950s, the Soviet government planned to demolish the Native Church and build the hotel "Moscow" in its place. A unique architectural monument was saved only by the fact that there was simply not enough space for the construction of a giant hotel.

Unfortunately, not all architectural attractions of Ternopil survived to the present day. So, the real decoration of the central part of the city was the Gothic church of the Mother of God of the Relentless Help. In 1954, it was blown up, and in the liberated area, TSUM was built. A similar fate befell the old city synagogue, whose building was destroyed in 1944.

Monuments of civil architecture

Sights of Ternopil are not only old churches and churches. Many monuments of civil architecture are also preserved here. Almost all of them are dated by the second half of the XIX - the beginning of the twentieth century.

The most beautiful civil buildings of Ternopil are the school of Queen Yadviga, the gymnasium of Slovak, the main building of the medical institute, the real gymnasium and others.
