Samurai Costume: kimono kimono and hakama

In this article you will get acquainted with the samurai costume and customs in the education of future warriors. The material will be useful to boys who are interested in Japanese culture. Moms after reading become able to sew a samurai costume with their own hands or a beautiful kimono dressing gown for themselves.

Who are the samurai?

First, tell the child who the samurai are. The information given below is useful to parents of both boys and girls. Engage the child in Japanese culture, and who knows, maybe in the future in your family there will be a real Japanese scholar and a connoisseur of the Japanese language.

The word "samurai" from Old Japanese means "one who serves a person of higher rank." These are the warriors who acted as the bodyguard of their master. In everyday life, they also played the role of a servant.

Educating the fighting spirit and willpower of the samurai

The training of future samurais began at eight years, and ended at 16. Boys, who in the future were to become samurais, were brought up very harshly. Education was based on such principles:

  • Respect of parents;
  • Devotion to the emperor;
  • Respect for the teacher;
  • Buddhist disdain for death.

The latter had a huge role in the life of the future warrior. The Japanese say: "The parent is the one who gave life, and the teacher is the one who brought up the man." The boys were brought up with fearlessness. The father could send the child at night to the cemetery. Children were taken to public executions, forced to look at severed heads.

To develop perseverance in the warrior, the guy was forced to perform heavy physical work, often not to sleep at night, to walk barefoot on the snow, to wake up neither light nor dawn. The future samurai could not be fed for days, considering the hunger strike as very useful.

Children were brought up restrained and emotionally cold. If the child got hurt and cried, the mother could only reproachfully look at him.
In the 15-16 years the guys were considered full-fledged warriors and they were given real weapons: katanu and wakidzashi. The guy was given a real samurai costume: wide hakama trousers and kimono.

Kimono features

In translation from the Japanese "kimono" - any kind of clothing. A newcomer will be able to carve out this wardrobe item. Kimonos in the land of the rising sun are worn by all: men, women, children. By tradition, 9 meters of cloth with a width of 30 cm passed on this thing.

Kimono is loose clothing that does not have strict dimensions. On the back, a robe, as a rule, is cut to a width of 60 cm. The shelves have an allowance for the smell. In the modern stylized version, it is mandatory. Historically, the costume has changed, and there could not be a smell.

Kimonos can be worn in many ways. Croile it, as a rule, a little longer than required by the growth of the owner. Kimonos can always be made visually shorter by folding under the belt.

The collar in the original kimono is a very voluminous detail. It is cut from a rectangle and reaches either to the waist or to the hem. Considering the old multi-layer kimono, you can notice something reminiscent of the figured cutout of the skirt in the upper layers of the costume. This is the edge of the gate, which in the classic antique kimono was huge.

Kimon kimono

In the photo below you see how to cut kimono, saving fabric. The width of the fabric for the robe should be 110 cm. Cut the material across all solid lines. The pattern is given with all allowances on the seams, except the bottom of the product. Add yourself a few centimeters on the kimono bend. First, sew a back on the bottom seam, and then cut out a mouth.

The pattern that is presented here is classical, since the back and the shelves form two separate parts. If desired, you can make them whole-cut.

Sewing kimono

Treat the edges of the fabric with an overlock. First, you need to connect the two elements of the backrest. Now you can cut the neck. When marking, do not forget about the allowance for the seam.

On the shoulders, grind in front and behind. Do not forget to attach the extensions to the right and left shelves.

Hose folded in half. Focus on the dotted line. Stitch the fabric from the shoulder to the wrist. You will have two pipes. Stick up your sleeves. To do this, connect the middle with the shoulder seam. Toss the sides.

Put the kimono on the model. Spread the product on the shoulders and back. Smell the stylized robe. Now on the shelves you need to bend the triangles for the collar. It will start from the occipital part of the neck to the bottom (set the level at will). Remove the suit from the model and secure the sewing elements with pins. Three parts of the gate are stacked in one lane. Fold it along and stitch it. Then it must be turned and ironed. You will receive a ribbon whose width is 5 cm.

Sew a collar, cut off all that is superfluous. Now you need to cut the whole product down. On this pattern you can sew like a samurai costume for a boy, and a beautiful kimono for a girl or a woman. Moms can make themselves a gentle, feminine robe for this pattern. Kimono can be used as a New Year's costume of a samurai for a children's morning performance in a kindergarten or carnival in a school.

Hakama

Now we need to complement the samurai costume with hakama trousers. These are very wide, practically dimensionless, trousers in a crease with cuts from a belt to a hip and strings. They are worn by both men and women. Female hakama tied high under the chest, men - at the waist.

Crawling Japanese trousers

For an adult, let's take a cloth with a width of 110 cm. A hakama pattern is given below. We cut the fabric along these lines. Add from below a few centimeters for the fold.

Stitching hakama

If the material "sticks", then it should be overtaken. It is necessary to sew together the elements of the front and back halves of hakama. You must have four parts.

Take the front elements and thread them together along the middle seam, stepping away from the upper edge of 30 cm. We work on the outer upper edge: on the inside we need to bend the triangle 10 cm from one side and 20 cm from the other. Cut off excess material. Do not forget to leave the allowance for the seam.

We pass to the laying of folds. In front of them there should be 6 pieces (you can make three). They should be deployed to the center. Hardly iron out the folds, there can not be a soft drapery. Now grind the sides from the incisions to the bottom edge and sew up the trousers.

Sewing a samurai costume can be made from cotton fabric, tight curtain material.

Kimono can be decorated with embroidery. The costume of a samurai for the New Year can be made from artificial silk.
