• One of the most common Indo-European languages;
• The most translatable in the world.

The Russian language in the modern world is a tremendous phenomenon. He is considered to be home to over 200 million, 130 of whom live on Russian territory. 50 million are native speakers, and most of these people use it as the first or second language in everyday communication. After Chinese and English (the most common in the world), half a billion people use the Russian language in varying degrees.

Any language acts throughout the history of the whole society.

What are the functions of the Russian language? The function of language is the manifestation of its essence. Linguists give this word two meanings. The first is the purpose and place of language in the world. The second is the role and purpose of linguistic units.

The functions of the Russian language in the modern world are extensive. Some scientists believe that there are about 16 of them, others allocate 25. However, all of them agree: the main, leading functions are:

• communicative,

• cognitive,

• cumulative.

The Russian language in the modern world serves to communicate people, and this is one of its leading functions. Communication is getting information, communicating. Only with the help of the language can you send and receive information, transfer and accumulate the experience of generations. Speech competence plays a very important role in this regard. The ability to choose the right language tools, the style of communication, the way of expressing one's own thoughts.

Cognitive function involves the use of language as a universal way of knowing the world around us. The meaning of each lexical word is based on a concrete concept, therefore it is in words that the results of cognition of the world are fixed. From this point of view, the modern Russian language, like the rest, is inextricably linked with human thinking. Thinking in the language materializes, with its help is passed on to other people to become their property.

Cumulative function is the ability of a language to collect, store, transmit information. This function helps to transfer and accumulate the experience of generations, serves as the only repository of human experience. The word can tell about a person, his place in the world, time, features of any sphere of life.

In addition to the three main functions, the Russian language in the modern world has many other social functions. With its help, form and express thoughts. Language helps to influence people.

Language and society are densely, inextricably linked. The faster the society develops, the richer the language becomes. With the advent of new means of production, branches of culture, new words appear, new ways of communication arise. Language participates in the development of science, expansion of production, education of generations, education and all other spheres of life.

It should be remembered that the division of language functions into communicative, cognitive and cumulative does not have clear boundaries. All of them are closely intertwined, because they are connected with thinking, communication.
