Relationship Between Japan And China

The improvement of relations between Japan and China began. The proclamation by the then Peking leadership of a policy of broad cooperation with the capitalist countries (with the curtailment of ties with the socialist countries) gave rise to the ruling circles of Japan the hope of solving their domestic and foreign policy problems by drawing closer to the PRC. The restoration of diplomatic relations with China in September 1972 opened the way to the development of interstate relations. On the day of signing the Joint Statement, Japan announced the termination of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which was an important precondition for Beijing.

The leaders of the PRC, in turn, abandoned the reparation requirements to Japan (estimated about 50 billion dollars previously estimated), also from its former position of resolute condemnation of the Japanese-American "security treaty", the remilitarization of Japan, the US military presence in the Far East, against Which was strongly advocated by democratic forces.

During the years 1973-1978. A number of treaties and agreements on trade, air traffic, fishing, etc. were concluded, which put Japan-China relations on a solid legal basis. There are also a number of agreements on granting loans and credits to China on a government basis. However, the hopes of the Japanese monopolies for large-scale and rapid penetration of the Chinese market were largely unrealizable. The relationship between Japan and China ...

This was hampered mainly by the limited export resources and foreign exchange reserves of China, Japan-China contradictions. Japan's business circles feared that, as it were, giving China large loans for the construction of modern enterprises did not turn out to be an intensification of Chinese competition in the markets of Asia. The apple of discord was still the problem of Taiwan, with which Japan continued to maintain close trade, economic, cultural and other ties, despite the severance of diplomatic relations.

In October 1978, the Japanese-Chinese treaty on peace and cooperation was concluded. Through this step, the ruling circles of Japan expected to establish even closer ties with China.

Japan places a special place in its foreign policy on the countries of South-East Asia, which it considers the traditional zone of its influence. Huge potential opportunities as a market and a source of raw materials, combined with the availability of cheap labor make the countries of Southeast Asia a promising target for the application of Japanese capital. In addition, they are geographically located on important lines of communication linking Japan to Australia, the countries of the Near and Middle East, Africa and Latin America, where Japanese monopoly capital is increasingly pushing.
