Pula (Croatia): information for individual tourists

Pula (Croatia) - one of the most interesting and largest cities on the peninsula of Istria. It is easy to get here, because there is an airport, which receives flights from different countries, and a seaport. If you are a fan of partying, come here! Pula is difficult to call a nice little provincial town that conquers the hearts of housewives with an abundance of flowers and painted shutters of houses. At first the city meets you wary, cold, but in its atmosphere you need to "fit in", become your own, and then it will win your heart forever.

Like the rest of Croatia, Pula has a complex centuries-old history. It was part of the ancient Roman Empire, the Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy and the Republic of Yugoslavia. And the first settlement on the site of Pula was founded by the ancient Greeks, according to local guides, Odysseus himself and the Argonauts! But most of all preserved in the city of monuments of Roman architecture. Among them, all are distinguished Arenas - amphitheater for gladiatorial fights, which once accommodated up to 20 thousand spectators. Along with the arenas in Pula, the Ancient Roman Forum, a pagan temple dedicated to Augustus and the triumphal arch of Sergius were preserved.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the region consistently belonged to the Venetian Republic, the Ottomans, the Austrians, the Italians, until the modern Pula was formed. Croatia as an independent state was formed relatively recently, in 1991. From the medieval architecture, the influence of the "Pearl of the Adriatic" - Venice, is especially noticeable. Many buildings copy the style of palaces and churches of the replaced "city on the water". Pay attention to the church of St. Nicholas. But the spirit of youth lives side by side with ancient history in Pula. Drive and special power are felt here on every corner. At the end of July, the resort hosts film festivals, as well as annual opera festivals.

An extensive network of public transport is what Pula can be proud of. Croatia generally has good outcomes for traveling by bus, but here it is best to walk on this city: all the tourist places are concentrated in the very center. Start acquaintance with the largest center of Istria follows from the fortress, built by the Venetians. It is located on a hill, and from there you will see all the local attractions, and at the same time admire cannons and mock-ups of ships in the military museum. From the evening entertainment the city can offer not only a variety of discotheques and show programs, but also a casino.

In the region where it finds Pula, Croatia is not particularly famous for its beaches. To relax on the sea, you need to take a bus and go to a recreation area called Punta Verudela. The coast here is rocky, most places for swimming are concrete platforms with handrails for entering the water. Between the inaccessible cliffs there are sometimes small cozy coves with small pebbles, but there are not many of them, and it is possible to approach them only by boat.

To compensate tourists for this lack of white soft sand, local hotels are very trying to "keep the brand." In these places there are many resorts, which Croatia is so famous for. Pula, whose hotels are known all over the world for a high level of service, can provide accommodation for every taste. Especially it should be mentioned here Medulin resort, in which all conditions for yachtsmen and nudists are created. Wildlife lovers are advised to go to the Brijuni National Park.
