Pilgrimage to Murom: the Monastery of Peter and Fevronia

How beautiful and amazing the ancient city of Murom! The monastery of Peter and Fevronia is the most famous landmark and the main local shrine. To find out what it is famous for, one should look into the old book and read the life of the pious princes.

Muromsky monastery of Peter and Fevronia became the last shelter of spouses, whom the church honors as patrons of marriage, family and children. Here from all parts of the Russian Federation people come to worship their relics, pray for a happy personal life. How it all began? In the distant twelfth century the prince of Murom was visited by a serpent-tempter. Cunningly she found out that only Peter, the younger brother of her husband, could kill the wicked. Defending the honor of the family, he fought with the reptile and killed her, but on the last breath the snake bit the prince. From poison, the whole white body of Peter was covered with terrible painful sores.

At that time Fevronia, the daughter of a bortnik, who was famous as a skilful healer, lived in the Ryazan land. He cured Peter and asked her to marry her: such is, they say, the will of God. Although he did not want to marry a simple girl, he kept his word. And since then they have healed in peace and harmony, wisely ruled the city. Having grown old, they took monasticism and, like in a fairy tale, died on the same day. Boyars tried several times to bury them separately, but every morning the bodies of the dead were again in one coffin. Therefore, they were put in one grave, and the last refuge was the monastery (Peter and Fevronia later).

But people continued to come to the grave of their princes, sincerely praying for their souls and asking for their conjugal happiness. And they say that the saints refused to help anyone.

The city of Murom is famous for its beautiful temples. The monastery of Peter and Fevronia (or the Holy Trinity women's) was built in the seventeenth century. The money for its erection was donated by a rich merchant. Then the masters demolished the old wooden church in 1351, and in its place a stone church was built. The five-domed Trinity Cathedral is small, but it has exquisite proportions and rich decoration. Skilful tiles with images of birds, animals and herbs give it special elegance. But this is not all, what is rich in the city of Murom. The monastery of Peter and Fevronia adjoins the Kazan Gate Church and the bell tower. Both buildings have an openwork and airy architecture, they are filled with light and seem weightless.

Attracts many believers in the city of Murom. The monastery of Peter and Fevronia acquired its final appearance in the nineteenth century. In the ensemble appeared stone cell buildings, a fence, a church and parish school. Here in 1975, the wooden church of St. Sergius of Radonezh (1715 AD) was transported.

Murom, the monastery of Peter and Fevronia in particular - the place is always crowded. Pilgrims come here every day, and nuns live in the monastery. One of the most ancient traditions of the shrine is embroidery with silver, gold, precious stones. With their hands the nuns adorn the temple and the miraculous icons that are in it. In Soviet times the complex, although closed, forbade divine services, but did not destroy, citing it as a monument to architecture. In 1991 the monastery began to revive in its former grandeur.
