Pediatrics was not developed in the territory of present-day Karelia at the beginning of the 20th century. This is indicated by the lack of children's hospitals and specialists for that period. Medical care was rendered by Zemstvo doctors consisting of 24 people. In 13 small hospitals, in which there were generally 637 beds, there were no separate chambers for children, nor the corresponding departments.

The history of the birth and development of pediatrics in Karelia

Since 1927 the first consultative centers began to open. At the same time, infectious and somatic departments were created, which were part of the city and rural hospitals. In the early 30-ies in Karelia, the first children's kitchens were organized. From the same time, pediatricians began to work. The ambulatory service was being formed at a rapid pace. In 1945-1967 in the city of Petrozavodsk, independent children's hospitals were gradually created. They were located in the adapted premises and numbered 80-125 places. It should be noted that during this period the republic had a rather high infant mortality rate. The administration tried to do everything possible to correct the situation. So, the Council of Ministers of the KASSR in 1963 decided to create a multi-faceted large medical institution. So the children's republican hospital of Petrozavodsk began its existence. At present, the children's republican hospital in Petrozavodsk is a multidisciplinary, multifunctional hospital of broad specialization. The institution can accept 400 people at the same time.
