Patrick Rotfuss: biography and books

Patrick Rotfuss is a modern American writer working in the genre of fantasy. He acquired fame not so long ago, only in 2007, when his first novel, The Name of the Wind, was published. For this work the writer was awarded a number of awards and recognized by a large number of fans of fantasy.

Biography

Patrick Rotfuss was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 6, 1973. Thanks to the long winters, the lack of Internet and cable television, he was addicted to reading, and then to writing.

In 1991, the future writer went to receive higher education at the university of his state Stevens Point. Initially, the young man wanted to become a chemist, then a clinical psychologist. But after 3 years of such studies, he decided to again change his status, choosing this time - "without specialization." This allowed him to attend those courses that seemed interesting to him. So six years passed, for which he managed to attend classes in philosophy, medieval history, the eastern theater, sociology, anthropology. And in 1999, after 9 years of study, Patrick finally received a diploma, which indicated that he received a bachelor's degree in English literature. No matter how amazing it may be.

However, he did not leave Washington University for a long time. Only two years have passed, and Rotfuss decides to return. Only now his role in Stevens Point will be different. Patrick returns to his native walls as a teacher.

Until now, Patrick Rotfuss lives in Wisconsin and teaches at the university. All the same long winters and the absence of television continue to contribute to his literary work. If the writer has free time, he spends it on alchemy in his basement, computer games and arranges symposiums for everyone at home.

Patrick is married to a sweet woman named Sarah. The couple have a son Oot.

Creation

During the student life Patrick had to interrupt by accidental earnings, as money was scarce. Despite this, he already began serious writing activity. To begin with, he wrote a novel in the genre of fantasy, which is called The Song of Flame and Thunder, into Russian can be translated as "The Song of Flame and Thunder." In addition, Patrick Rotfuss had his column, which is very popular, in the university newspaper, where he placed satirical advice. But this was not enough for a young writer, he composed poetry for the literary series of the state. And in his spare time, if it remained, he wrote a comedy script for a local radio show. And Rotfuss was absolutely not going to stop there. He was not afraid of failure, for every new business he undertook with incredible excitement and invariably strove to bring it to the end.

And it's no wonder that two months before he graduated from the university, Patrick wrote down his big novel. And the main hero of this work was a legendary man, named Quout, who in a few years will have to bring unprecedented success to his author.

Success

As soon as the work was completed, Rotfuss took his work to several publishers. However, rejection came from everywhere. But the writer is not used to giving up. A little time passed, and in 2002 he decided to take part in the storytelling competition, for which he reduced his novel and remade something in the storyline. The result was that his work received an award in the genre of science fiction.

After this success, offers from publishers did not keep you waiting - the rights to the novel were bought out by DAW Books, which was incredibly pleased with Patrick Rotfuss. "The Assassins of the King" - it was customary in the publishing house to title the work of Patrick, breaking it into three parts. The novel was too big, therefore from it it was decided to make the whole series.

The first book of this series was published in 2007, bringing success to its creator. It was called "The name of the wind". Later, the product received a number of awards and fell into the best-selling list of the newspaper "New York Times". The second part of the cycle was released in 2011 and again took first place in the lists of the New York Times. The third part was published in 2013, but in Russian has not yet been published, to the great regret of all those whose heart was defeated by Patrick Rotfuss. "Doors made of stone" - this is the name of the final part of the trilogy, the output of which is planned in our country in mid-2016.

Name of the wind

The first novel of the trilogy "The Killer of the Kings Chronicles". The work is written in a unique poetic language in a very bizarre and fascinating form. "The name of the wind" (Patrick Rotfuss) tells the story of a simple teenager named Kwout, caught in a difficult situation, the result of which is the decision to take revenge. The path of revenge is to pass along to the reader and the hero.

The story begins with the fact that the protagonist, a roving actor, returns in the morning to the camp that his troupe has broken, and finds the ashes instead. From this moment the young man will be guided only by the desire for revenge. What this will lead him, it will be known at the end of the trilogy.

Fears of the wise man (Patrick Rotfuss)

The second part of the cycle was divided into two books. They continue the story of the adventures of Quout. In this part, the young man will have to endure many trials and even a little distraction from his main goal - to avenge his dead friends and family. But among other things, he still has to learn what it means to become a legend of his time, and how difficult it is to live with it.

Other works

In addition to the cycle about Quout, Rotfuss is the author of a number of stories and short stories, such as:

  • "Darkness of the Deep Caves" (2010).
  • "The Stormy Tree" (2014).
  • "Calm dignity of silence" (2014).

In addition to these works, there are many others that, unfortunately, have not yet been translated into Russian.
