Passport series - what it means and how it appeared

In each state, sooner or later the government was puzzled by the problem of registering its citizens, and began to issue them official documents for identification of the individual. The first such documents were a simple reference, in addition to the name, surname, type of activity and description of appearance, there was a registration number - a kind of passport series, by which you could find an account in the registration book. But in the middle of the 19th century, passports were abolished massively - this was due to the development of railway transport, because of which it became difficult to track the movement of people. But the First World War that began, again served as an impetus to the introduction of official documents.

At present, a mandatory document for all Russian citizens is a passport, the series and number of which serve to identify the individual in all existing databases. No other document can serve as a full-fledged replacement for a passport, it must be received by all people who have reached the age of 14 years. The document proving the identity is issued in the departments of the Internal Affairs Department of the Russian Federation or the Federal Migration Service of Russia, while the passport indicates the place of permanent residence - the region, the region, the republic or the region. The passport series corresponds to the code assigned to the corresponding subject of the Russian Federation, therefore the first two digits indicate the area of residence. The second two digits indicate the year of issue of the document, and the subsequent six-digit number is the serial number.

In the USSR, a single passport system was introduced in 1933, while residents of the countryside did not receive a passport on their hands until 1974. In Soviet official documents, a series of passports were labeled differently - in the course was the designation of the letters of the Russian alphabet and Roman numerals. The Roman numerals indicated the sequence of issuing official documents, and the letters in turn corresponded to the region or the region: In Moscow, passports were issued with the letters MJ and SB, in Kirov IR, in Krasnodar AG, etc.

It is interesting that at present the passport series is defined by the OKATO handbook, which does not correspond to its analogue of the traffic police. If you suddenly notice a discrepancy between your document and the region code or year of issue, this does not mean that the passport is not real. Simply in 1997 there was a release of books on a special circulation, in which a series of passports was replaced by the established figures, their own for each region.

For citizens of other countries, the numbering of passports - the series as such they do not contain, but there is a long number with alphabetic (Latin alphabet) and numeric characters. In this connection, when registering certain documents in our country, they have problems - the forms contain a mandatory "column of passports".

It must be remembered that the series and the passport number are confidential and not subject to disclosure. Therefore, it is not necessary to inform everyone about their passport data, especially to publish them in public, a passport or a copy of it can be presented only in official institutions, such as banks, police stations, hotel staff, etc.
