Painting the ceiling. How to avoid mistakes?

Painting ceilings should be at the very beginning of the finishing works. In this case, there is no danger of splashing paint on already finished walls and floor. But in order to paint successfully the ceiling , it will be necessary to properly prepare the surface for this process.

First of all, you need to remove the old finish. If it is whitewash, then the ceiling is abundantly moistened with hot water with a wide brush, and then scrape whitewash with a metal spatula.

If the ceiling was pasted with wallpaper, the latter must be completely removed, previously wetted to facilitate work. The old layer of paint is scraped off or removed with special washings.

Now you should inspect the surface and eliminate all irregularities, cracks and defects. For leveling the surface, putty compounds are used, which are sold as dry mixes. If the ceiling has traces of fungus or some contamination (for example, greasy or rusty spots), they must be removed, otherwise, after the painting of the ceiling, these spots will be allocated, spoiling the entire species.

To remove stains of mold use special antifungal compounds that are sold in construction stores. Rusted stains are wiped with a solution of hydrochloric acid, and the oil is degreased with pure gasoline.

Now you need to decide what to paint the ceiling? The choice of material depends on the purpose of the room. For example, in the kitchen and bathroom it is recommended to select such paints that are well able to withstand moisture. The ceiling in these rooms should be resistant to washing and the possible settling of soot. Typically, for painting the ceiling in these rooms, mixtures based on acrylate are selected. In other rooms paint is used, which is selected taking into account the material of the ceiling. That is, concrete surfaces require a different color than that used for ceilings lined with wood.

And how much paint will be needed to paint the ceiling qualitatively? As a rule, the calculation is carried out, based on the rate of paint consumption per one square meter. Such information is usually found on the package. It should be noted that in most cases, the ceiling has to be painted twice. In addition to the colorful material, you will need to buy a roller, a bath for it, a paint brush for painting the corners, a paint tape (scotch tape).

High-quality painting of the ceiling begins with the fact that the roller is dipped in a tray with paint and rolled several times over a sheet of linoleum or cardboard. This operation allows the paint to impregnate the roller material and completely fill it. If you skip this stage, then during the work on the ceiling may appear so-called "unmarked", that is, the paint will lie unevenly.

Now you can start painting. Uniform painting of the ceiling should be done quickly enough, without long interruptions in the work, especially since using a roller to do it is easy.

How to control the painting process? It is known that if you look at the ceiling from the bottom at a right angle, then it's very difficult to notice badly painted places. Experienced masters know that to assess the quality of work, you need to step aside to look at the ceiling from a different angle. In this case, to notice spots and streaks on the still low ceiling is much easier.

The second coat of paint can be applied only after the first one has dried well. If suddenly after drying it turns out that the ceiling is painted unevenly, that is, there are spots, then in no case should you try to cover these spots with paint. The only thing you can do is completely repaint the ceiling.

The corners of the room can not be painted with a roller, so they should be treated with a paint brush. In this case, the paint should be carefully rubbed, so that the applied layer is completely merged with the main coating.
