Novotikhvinsky Monastery of Ekaterinburg: photo, location map

Tikhvin Monastery is the oldest in the glorious Russian city of Yekaterinburg. His long history began with an almshouse at the Assumption Church (1796). Initially, the women's community consisted of three women, led by Sister Taisia (in the world - Tatyana Kostromina).

Creation of a monastery

Tatyana Kostromina, the daughter of a worker at the Verkh-Isetsky Works, founded the Novo-Tikhvinsky Women's Monastery in Yekaterinburg.

For several years she traveled to St. Petersburg, trying to achieve the opening of the monastery and receiving salaries for sisters. December 31, 1809, the Novotikhvinsky Monastery of Yekaterinburg was officially opened. It continued to be built throughout almost the entire XIX century.

Every year the monastery actively developed. All women could join the community, regardless of their position in society and their age. By the middle of the XIX century, the Novo-Tikhvinsky Women's Monastery (Yekaterinburg) became the largest in the Urals, and also one of the most significant in the whole of Russia.

Shrine of the monastery

The most revered shrine of the monastery was and remains today the icon of the Virgin. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the country came to her.

In 1824 the emperor Alexander I came to the monastery, and 13 years later (1837) was visited by Tsarevich Alexander, in the future Alexander II.

Description of the monastery

By the beginning of the last century, 135 nuns and 900 novices lived in the monastery. In those days the monastery was surrounded by a high and powerful fortress wall with towers. It had six churches, various workshops, monastic cells, a children's shelter, a library, a hospital, a bakery.

Near the monastery was built a hospice house (today it houses the Institute of Law and Philosophy of the UrB RAS). The premises of the present Mounting College housed a diocesan school. The girls-orphans studied in it.

The Novotikhvinsky Monastery of Yekaterinburg owned subsidiary farms where nuns and novices grew vegetables, fruits, and raised poultry.

Church of the Assumption

This is the oldest temple of the monastery. The Assumption Church was built in 1782. The construction was financed by the merchant II Khlephetin. Later, it was rebuilt many times and reconstructed.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

On the territory of the monastery there is a temple, which is known far beyond the confines of the monastery. Novotikhvinsky nunnery (Yekaterinburg) is rightfully proud of its largest temple. The majestic and very beautiful cathedral has been rebuilt today. Previously, it was the main architectural landmark of this part of the city. On the patronal feasts the church accommodated more than six thousand people.

The All-Saints Church

This construction is interesting, first of all, by the fact that it is a rare example of Byzantine architectural style for Yekaterinburg. The church was erected in 1900 at the expense of local patron of arts M. Ivanov.

The development of the monastery

In the unique appearance of the monastery made a great contribution MP Malakhov - a famous architect, a native of this wonderful city. Novotikhvinsky Monastery of Yekaterinburg was known for its beauty. Malakhov supervised the reconstruction of the temples of the monastery. Today this is the most famous landmark in Yekaterinburg.

The monastery received basic income from the sale of various products produced in workshops. Part of it was financed by the state.

The novices and nuns engaged in silk, seamstresses and gold embroidery needlework, sewed cassocks for priests, painted porcelain, spun canvases and carpets.

Novotikhvinsky Monastery of Yekaterinburg had on its territory the most prestigious cemetery. Many great citizens of Ekaterinburg - local historian Chuprin, architect M.P. Malakhov, doctor A.A. Mislavsky and many others.

Monastery after the revolution

At the risk of living in 1918, novices and nuns of the monastery tried to help the last to the prisoner in Yekaterinburg, Nikolai II and the imperial family. They carried products, supported them spiritually. This continued until the execution of the royal family.

During the Soviet era, the Novotikhvinsky Convent in Yekaterinburg was closed in the beginning (1920), and later the cemetery was liquidated. Tombstone and plate, many of which were true masterpieces of stone-carving art, were barbarously turned out of the earth, and then used for construction. The burial places of the great Yekaterinburg residents were lost forever. Bala put forward the idea in his place to build a zoo. Fortunately, she was not destined to come to life.

In 1922 a monstrous blasphemy took place in front of the monastery temple - the archives of the monastery burned at the stake, which contained unique historical documents.

Maimed Destiny

The nuns of the Novotikhvinsky Monastery were given a hard fate - many of them were arrested, they were sent to camps and prison cells. The last abbess Magdalene was arrested eight times, but after several months in the dungeons, she was released. Magdalene passed away in 1934. She was buried at the Ivanovo Cemetery.

Soviet years

Many buildings of the monastery in the Soviet years were rebuilt, and more often destroyed. In this holy place a military hospital was placed.

In one of the temples of the monastery for 30 years there was a museum of local lore.

New life of the old monastery

Only in 1994 began the normal life of Novo-Tikhvinsky nunnery. Now this monastery is reborn, the place of destroyed churches is occupied by new beautiful temples.

As before, one of the main relics of the monastery remains the miracle of the icon of Our Lady that survived in difficult years. In addition, all the parishioners and nuns worship the ark, which stores the relics of 25 saints, the sacred icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and a part of his relics.

Nowadays the Novotikhvinsky Monastery is engaged in charity, helps all those in need. To these good deeds, the creators of the guide to the sights of the Urals have joined . In 2011, the author of the collection Marina Chebotaeva donated dozens of these books about the native land to the monastery.

How to get there

To all who would like to see the Novotikhvinsky Monastery, I would like to say that the map of the journey to the monastery can be viewed on the official site of the monastery. The address of the monastery: st. Green Grove, house 1.
