This fish is well known to everyone who at least once went fishing in the Avacha Bay, it is often caught in the coastal zone. Zaitsegol extensively inhabits the Pacific Ocean, namely, in the northern part, meeting throughout the Asian coast, from the Yellow to the Barents Sea. And then its habitation extends along the American coast up to California. But most often it can be found in the waters of southeastern Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands.

The fish are pretty large. Its weight exceeds 2.5 kg, and its length is more than 55 cm. Seasonal migrations are characteristic of the terpuga. At the end of May or the beginning of June, coastal waters warm up sufficiently, and it approaches the shallow water zone (20-30 m depth) to spawn. The reef zone with patches of rocky soil is the place where the fish is found during the spawning season. As a rule, it keeps in the zone of underwater vegetation, as it is a substrate for its spawn.

The spawning period of the terpug is rather prolonged, this is explained by the portionation of the spawning. In the beginning, male males gather on spawning grounds, they choose the most suitable sites. These females are swamped by these guarded areas, they begin to mow their eggs in batches. After the spawning is completed, the females leave the spawning site. But the males remain on guarding the masonry until the larvae escape. Only brightly colored and the largest specimens of males remain for protection. After the embryonic development of the eggs has ended, and this occurs from the beginning to the middle of October, the hare-headed terpug begins to move away from the coast. He sinks for wintering to a depth of 300 m. But his fry initially inhabits the water column, and only after reaching a certain size, it will pass to the bottom way of life.

The fish is an omnivore. Even during spawning, it continues to eat actively. Basically, its diet includes various crustaceans, small fishes and mollusks. Terpug does not disdain and the waste of the fishing industry, and the eggs of other fish are used in the course, as, indeed, and zazevavshihsya fellow. And I must say that it is caviar that is a part of its diet.

Fish terpug is an object of sea anglers in Kamchatka. Its largest population is observed in the oceanic waters of South-East Kamchatka and Northern Kuriles. Sometimes it comes across in the western waters and off the south-western coast of the Bering Sea. Most often, individuals catch more than 1.5 kg and a length of up to 49 cm. As soon as the spring warm-up begins, the terpug moves to the coastal waters. At the end of March his jambs appear at a depth of 200 meters, and in April he is already on the shelf. In coastal waters, fish can be caught easily, you can not even go out on a boat, but simply go deeper into the water.
