Monastery of St. Daniel in Moscow: a male choir, a schedule of services and an official website. How to get to Moscow's St. Danilov Monastery?

March 17, 2003 marked the 700th anniversary of the death of Saint Prince Daniel of Moscow. He ruled in the period from 1276 to 1303 years. At this time, Moscow acquires a princely throne and becomes an independent Russian state after the annexation of Pereslavl-Zalessky and Kolomna to it. And Daniel himself was the first great Moscow prince and the progenitor of a new dynasty, according to the definition of pre-revolutionary historians.

Monastery

In the capital of our state, in honor of the holy prince, part of the cathedral church of the Seven Ecumenical Councils of the Danilovsky Monastery is consecrated. It was founded by Daniil near the Serpukhov Outpost in Zamoskvorechye. This monastery (St. Danilov) is the oldest in Moscow. It was founded in 1282 year.

Prince Daniel of Moscow

The Holy Prince was the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky. He was born in 1261 in Vladimir. At the age of eleven - under the section between brothers - Daniel gets Moscow. In 1282 he built a church on the bank of the Moscow River in honor of St. Daniel Stylites, who is his heavenly patron. Here begins the laying of the male St. Danilov Monastery. The young prince, remembering the words of his father that God is in truth, and not in power, seeks peace and peacefulness. Its main goal was to strengthen and strengthen Moscow as an independent state. Already with his eldest son, Ivan Kalita, Moscow gets a label for the grand reign and now before this inconspicuous city becomes the capital of Russian cities until the reign of Peter the Great.

Following the example of his father, Alexander Nevsky, before his death, the holy prince Daniel accepts the schema and the monastic order. He died on March 4, 1303 according to the old style. According to his will, the prince was buried in a simple brotherly churchyard of the St. Daniel Monastery - "not in church, but in a fence".

Princely grave

Daniel's eldest son, Ivan Kalita, translates in 1330 his father's monastery into the Kremlin's location, for its impregnable walls, in order to protect it from raids, and ascribes it to the Cathedral of the Savior on Bohr. The old monastery with the prince's grave of Daniel, he entrusts to the archimandrite of the Kremlin monastery. However, the distant abode gradually emptied and sulked. Over time, it became known as the Danilov villager. So the princely tomb after a few decades was abandoned by his descendants.

It was only under Ivan the Third that a very significant event occurred that served as an impetus to the gradual revival of this complex, after which the St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow once again began to play an important role in the life of the city, and the memory of Prince Daniel of Moscow receives special reverence even before the relics are acquired and attributed to The image of saints.

Ancient legend

According to legend, Ivan the Third once rode with his servants along the banks of the Moscow River, just past the burial place of Prince Daniel. At that moment, under one of the horsemen, a horse stumbled, causing the servant to fall to the ground. An unknown prince appeared to him and said that he was Daniel Moskovsky, the master of this place, here his grave. He ordered to give Ivan such words: "You blame yourself, but forgot about me." Hearing the story of the servant, the Grand Duke ordered to hold conciliar services for his ancestors, as well as giving alms for remembrance. Since that time this tradition has taken its lead, and all the Moscow princes served the requiem for their ancestor, Daniel Moskovsky.

Restoration of the monastery

During the reign of Vasily the Third son - Ivan the Terrible, another wonderful event was noted - at the grave of Prince Daniel of Moscow, the dying man was healed. Learning of this, the king ordered an annual religious procession to the tomb of his ancestor and serve as a service for him. And most importantly, he restores the monastery of St. Daniel in Zamoskvorechye. Ivan the Terrible orders to build a new building of the cathedral church in honor of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. There are also built brotherly cells, and the whole territory is covered with high walls, the restored monastery is populated by monks. In addition, the monastery of St. Daniel from now on becomes independent. Before that, he was subordinated to the Kremlin's Transfiguration Cathedral.

There is a version that the new buildings of this complex are erected not exactly on the place where the former one was, with the cathedral church, and slightly aside - five hundred meters to the north. Historians suppose that on the site of the Daniil church, which the blessed prince arranged, stands the present church of the Resurrection of the Speaker in Danilovskaya Sloboda.

The construction of the temple

In the period from 1555 to 1560 years in the Danilov Monastery built a cathedral church in honor of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. It was illuminated in May 1561 in the presence of Ivan the Terrible and the royal family Metropolitan Makarii. The Sovereign presented the newly built monastery Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, as well as letters of the royal icon-painter, whose stigmas were portraits of Ivan the Terrible, Tsarevich John and Metropolitan of Moscow Makarios.

Canonization

According to legend, in 1652 the holy prince Daniel is in a dream to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. As a result, by his decree of August 30, Patriarch Nikon and the Bishops' Council in the presence of the sovereign opened the prince's grave. Thus, the incorrupt holy relics of Daniel of Moscow were recovered, from which at that time many people were healed. The holy relics were transferred with special solemnity to the monastery's cathedral church and buried at the right choir in a wooden grave. At the same time, the Moscow prince was ranked as a saint, he was celebrated twice a year, about his death in March and the day of his holy relics on September 12, according to a new style.

The service of St. Daniel

The first service to Saint Daniel was compiled by Archimandrite Constantine (abbot of the monastery) in 1761. However, forty years later, the life of the prince and the new service were compiled by Metropolitan Platon (Levshin). Now every Sunday before the holy relics of Daniel, read the Akathist. And in the days of remembrance from the Kremlin cathedrals the procession to the monastery of the Holy Danilov Monastery was going. Over time, a chapel in honor of Saint Daniel of Moscow was consecrated in the temple of the monastery. His tomb was moved to the left choir and made for her a donation of Fedor Golitsyn silver salary. In 1812, he was stolen by Napoleon's troops. Therefore, in 1817, the relics of St. Daniel of Moscow were laid in a new silver cancers. Next, on the wall, was placed the icon of the prince, painted in full length on the former wooden lid of his tomb.

The period of the new heyday

In the eighteenth century, above the porch and porch of the cathedral church, the three-tiered church of St. Daniel Stylite was erected - in memory of the oldest monastery. This century, and the next nineteenth, is called the heyday of the ancient St. Daniel Monastery. At this time, new churches and a belfry, the church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity (it was erected in 1833 with the funds of the Kumanins and Shustovs) were built here. Kumanins were related to the famous Russian writer Fedor Dostoyevsky. The Trinity Church was consecrated by Saint Filaret himself. By the way, it was built by the great architect OI Bove shortly before his death, it became one of the last of its structures. It used to be that it was built by the equally famous architect Evgraf Tyurin, who built the Epiphany Cathedral in Elokhov and the house church of St. Tatiana on Mokhovaya.

The monastic churchyard

During the reign of Catherine II, when the epidemic of plague broke out, the epicenter of which was Moscow, the St. Daniel's Monastery became the burial place of the dead from this disease, as it was located in the distance from the central districts of the capital. When the plague receded, the cemetery was covered with earth. Since ancient times there has been a tradition to bury in the monastery both monks and laymen. Over time, a cemetery appeared here, where noble and rich people were buried. On the graveyard of the Danilovsky Monastery, his musician N.G. Rubinshtein, who is the creator of the Russian Musical Society, found his last resting place; The Slavophiles AS Khomyakov and Yu. F. Samarin, the artist VG Perov, and the most famous of the laity - N. V. Gogol. The coffin and his body were brought here in the hands of the Tatiani temple at the University of Mokhovaya, where the deceased was served as an honorary member of the Moscow University. However, in 1953 the remains of the great writer were moved to the Novodevichy cemetery.

Hard times

In prerevolutionary times, the ancient monastery saw many adversities. For example, in 1812 the French officers settled there. Despite the fact that most of the treasures were removed in advance to other cities, many values still remained within its walls. At that time, a curious case occurred: the first party of the French military warned the monks that another group of officers would arrive soon, but they were people unclean in their hands. And recommended to hide all the values. They even helped the monks to bury the treasure. And in fact, the newly arrived band looted everything that remained, did not disdain even the antimension.

Another misfortune came to the monastery after the October Revolution. It is well known that many priests who were expelled by the Bolsheviks from the church departments concealed themselves in the St. Danilov Monastery for refusing to accept a new ideology and fidelity to the traditions of Orthodox Christianity. They were called "Danilovites". Many were subsequently sent to prison and exiled. The very same oldest monastery in Moscow was closed in 1930, the latest in the capital.

Opening of the monastery

In May 1983, the Danilovsky Monastery was again placed by the decision of the Soviet government at the disposal of the Moscow Patriarchate for the organization of an official residence there.

So far, it has not been possible to find graves that were destroyed during the demolition of the cemetery. Therefore here in 1988 the chapel-ossuary was built, which is a symbolic tombstone for all buried in the monastery. And next to the places of the graves of Khomyakova and Gogol, they established two bas-reliefs in their memory. July 12, 1988 there was a solemn service in honor of the Millennium of the Baptism of Russia. Today in the Holy Danilov Monastery is the main residence of His Holiness the Patriarch, as well as the Bishops' Councils of the Russian Orthodox Church.
