Metastasis is a complication of malignant neoplasm

The secondary focus of a malignant tumor is usually called metastases. The presence of metastasis in the body suggests that the tumor cells penetrated the bloodstream and were transferred to other vital organs with blood.

Metastasis is a complication of cancer

Metastasis is a frequent complication of an oncological disease, in the absence of appropriate treatment it leads to fatal consequences. According to statistics, secondary tumors exceed the number of primary diseases and make up about fifteen cases per hundred thousand people per year. Modern diagnostic tools have allowed several times to increase the early diagnosis of metastases, most often in the affected organ there are several of them. The most accurate methods of diagnosis to date are CT and MRI with a contrast agent.

Metastases. What is it?

All malignant neoplasms are so terrible that they have the ability to spread to other anatomical structures and organs. Getting into the blood, tumor cells begin their journey through the body and thereby give rise to new tumors (metastases). Most often, cancerous tumors give metastases to the liver, to the bones, to the lungs, to the brain.

Clinical picture of metastasis of the body

The clinical picture of the metastasis of the body largely depends on which organ is affected. When lesions metastases of the brain, the following symptoms occur: nausea, vomiting, headache, gait and mental disorders, increased intracranial pressure. With metastases in the liver, such symptoms can be supplemented by pain and heaviness in the right hypochondrium, and with metastases in the bones, pain in the spine. Metastasis is a serious problem in the body and the patient must listen carefully to their individual sensations. Any pains and other unpleasant sensations should become an occasion for immediate reference to the doctor-oncologist who precisely knows, that such metastasises and as they can show itself in each concrete case.

Treatment of metastases

A few years ago, patients with metastases in the brain were considered doomed, but today the situation has changed for the better. Today there is a whole complex of medicines aimed at fighting this serious disease of our time. They give an excellent effect at an early stage of detection of tumors. Completely to defeat cancer to modern researchers it was not possible, however today there is an opportunity considerably to prolong a life to the cancer patient and to improve quality of its life.

Methods of treatment of metastases

Treatment of metastases can be surgical and therapeutic. The first type includes resection of the liver and destruction of metastases by electric current. The risk of such operations is quite large, since bleeding and other complications are possible. Therapeutic methods of treatment of metastases include chemotherapy and systemic hormonotherapy. However, in addition to the negative impact on metastases, these methods have a negative effect on the entire body as a whole. They are accompanied by poor health, nausea, vomiting, intoxication of the whole body, a change in the hormonal status.

How is metastasis treated?

Metastasis is a tumor-like growth and, first of all, it should be remembered about it. Basically, the treatment of metastases is directed to fight directly with cancer cells, to combat a variety of complications and to adequate anesthesia. When treating tumors in bones, a person needs to adjust his diet, namely, to introduce foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. Such measures will avoid osteoporosis, a serious complication of a cancerous tumor. Treatment of metastases in the brain is accompanied by special medication therapy, which allows the patient to lead a full life.
