M62 - cargo locomotive. M62: modifications, interesting facts

The M62 cargo-passenger locomotive was created in 1965 and was produced at the Lugansk locomotive plant. The index "6" in the name indicates that the locomotive has 6 axes, and the index "2" - on its belonging to the second type. The article will consider the history of creating a model of the M62 diesel locomotive, its main characteristics and modifications.

Creature

The appearance of the locomotive is due to an interesting event. In 1961, the Hungarian railway acquired 20 Swedish diesel locomotives with a capacity of 1950 horsepower. At home, the model was called "Di3", but in Hungary it was called M61. When the Soviet leadership, in particular Nikita Khrushchev, learned about this purchase, it was very dissatisfied. After this incident, the countries of the socialist camp were forbidden to acquire locomotives from the capitalist countries. At the same time, the Lugansk Diesel Locomotive Plant received an order for the urgent development of a locomotive under the 1435-millimeter track, with a capacity of 2000 horsepower. In the early 70's, the main contender for this role, according to experts, was a diesel locomotive model TG102. However, after he suffered a fiasco, it was decided to create a new locomotive.

Production

The first prototypes were built by 1965. In Hungary, the locomotive was called M62, which began to be used throughout the Soviet Union, in exchange for the planned TE112. It is worth noting that for the railways of the USSR such a decision was atypical.

Soon the locomotive was in full swing at the Lugansk plant and for the first time it was supplied only to the socialist countries. Then it began to be sold to other states. In Poland, the locomotive was called ST44; In Czechoslovakia - T769.1; In the GDR - V200, then BR 120, and even later, with a change in the single classification - BR 220; In the DPRK - K62; In the MPR - 2M62M, finally, in Cuba - 61.6.

In 1970, diesel locomotives M62 began to be produced on wheels under the 1520-millimeter gauge. In addition, some models were designed to work in the border areas with a gauge of 1435 millimeters. In total, during the production of the locomotive M62 in the basic version, 721 copies were built. Many more machines were released in modified versions. The last locomotive of the modification 2M62U was released in 2001.

Design

In the locomotive M62 much was borrowed from the locomotive model TE10. We are talking about a cart, power transmission scheme, as well as the scheme and drives of auxiliary units. However, thanks to the successful arrangement and some constructive solutions, the drivers were very satisfied with the operation of the locomotive. Without curiosity, it was still possible - designing a locomotive for a western dimension, the designers were forced to sacrifice slightly its efficiency. So the efficiency of the locomotive was slightly lower than that of the previous TE3 model.

During the operation of the locomotive, some design flaws were identified. The most important of these was the small capacity of the fuel tank, combined with the great appetite of a two-stroke diesel engine.

When the production of the M62 locomotive in Czechoslovakia was launched, the local railway stopped production of the model T678.0.

Modifications

During the release of the locomotive, quite a few of its modifications were created:

  1. 2M62. It is a two-section version, which in 1976 replaced the locomotive TE3. During the production, the design diagram of the M62 diesel locomotive has received a number of changes, in particular, from the 751st model, the locomotive has been equipped with block buffer lights. A total of 1261 copies of this model were produced.
  2. 2M62U. It is a two-section locomotive with incessant trolleys, an increased volume of fuel tank and buffer lights, which was produced since 1987. In addition to the models built for export, 393 copies of this locomotive were produced.
  3. 3M62U. This three-section locomotive with incessant carts and block lanterns, which was produced since 1986. During production, 104 copies left the assembly line. Often there are only two sections of the locomotive, especially after major repairs.
  4. DM62. It is a single-section locomotive, which was manufactured from 1982 to 1994. It was used as part of the military railway missile complex "Molodets". Each of the trains of this complex was equipped with three such diesel locomotives. From the basic model, this locomotive was distinguished by a number of changes aimed at improving the reliability of the locomotive. Some of them were later used in the production of the model 2M62U. From the conventional model of the locomotive M62, the version of the DM62 also differs in appearance: inconspicuous carts, block buffer lights, a partitioning panel and an adjustable purifier. On the number plate of the locomotive there was no index "D". In total, 154 such machines were produced. After the dismantling of the combat complex, diesel locomotives were transferred to public railways.
  5. M62UP. In fact, this is a single-section version of the locomotive 3M62U. It was used only for industrial purposes, mainly on the territory of Ukraine. Only 40 copies were issued.
  6. 3M62P. It is a three-section diesel locomotive of the 1988 issue, designed for export of a carrier rocket to the launch site of the Baikonur cosmodrome. The third sections were not used from the very beginning and were soon written off. There were only three copies of such diesel locomotives. At the same time one of them was converted into a simple locomotive 2M62U. And the other two, after a long period of inactivity, were partially dismantled and sold.
  7. 2M62M. This two-section model, created specifically for the Ulan Bator Railway. The locomotive was adapted for use in semi-desert conditions. It has a special design for cleaning the air supplied to the engines, from dust and sand. A total of 60 such locomotives came off the assembly line.

Modernization

Diesel locomotives M62, which have exhausted their motor resource, undergo modernization. This helps them improve. As a rule, the two-stroke diesel engine of the locomotive M62 is replaced by a four- cycle diesel . You can find updated diesel locomotives by using an air filter, which acts as a "cross hump" on the roof. Sometimes the updated models get a new name: M62K in Lithuania; 2M62UK in Belarus and Russia; 2M62K in Lithuania, Belarus and Russia; 2M62UK in Latvia.

In Latvia, Lithuania and Hungary, some locomotives in the modernization frames received diesel engines from the American company Caterpillar.

Specifications

Finally, we give the main parameters of the locomotive M62:

  1. Engine power - 2000 hp
  2. The speed (structural) is 100 km / h.
  3. The weight of the section is 116-126 tons, depending on the modification.
  4. The load on the axle is 19.3-21 tons, depending on the modification.
  5. The thrust force is 196-245 kN, depending on the operating mode.
