Local painting of the bumper with your own hands

Any car owner tries in every possible way to support his car in a worthy manner. Today, there is a mass of polishes, liquid glass and other means for protecting paintwork. However, if you are "rubbed" in the parking lot, none of the above means will save you from scratching. Especially if it's deep damage. The way out of the situation is local painting of the bumper. It's quite possible to make it with your own hands. Let's look at how.

Is it possible to avoid repainting?

It is not always possible to restore the surface without this operation. But if the damage is not too deep, then abrasive polishing can save the situation. Now on the bumpers a very thick coat of paint. And if the scratch does not reach the "base", you can try to restore everything without re-applying the enamel. But it is worth remembering that abrasive polishing removes a certain percentage of varnish. The main thing here is not to rub the paint to the base. All you need is a corner grinder with a felt attachment and an abrasive paste. When it is rubbed, the upper part of the LCP is removed. Thus, you can restore the old, factory look without painting. In the case of deep deformations, only re-coloring will help. But what's the point of pouring the whole element, if the length of the scratch is only a couple of centimeters? The most compromise solution is the local painting of the bumper.

What do you need for the operation?

So, for the work we need:

  • Waterproof sandpaper.
  • Primer (special, for plastic).
  • Putty (when restoring deep damage).
  • Painting tape and film.

As for the paint itself, it should be numbered. Knowing the code of the enamel, you will definitely fall into color. Now there are paints not only in the banks (under the spray), but also already pumped into the can. The main thing is to specify the factory code of the enamel. It is located on the plate in front of the engine compartment (or on the sticker at the body pillar).

Preparation

It is worth noting that this operation can be made without removing the bumper. Local painting in this case means spraying the enamel immediately on the surface. But preliminary this site needs to be prepared. First it is washed from the mud (preferably with water with shampoo). Next, you need to process the area with sandpaper. Important point - do not rub the paper "dry." Skin must be wetted in water. It's even better if she stays there for 5-10 minutes. You also need to choose the right grain. Less is better. So you will not need putty and additional leveling of the surface before the local painting of the bumper.

After the water has dried, treat the area with a degreaser. It is important to pay attention to the entire area of the bumper, including the places of contact with the edge of the wing and headlights. It is here that dirt accumulates most often, and it is very difficult to wash it off. If local painting of the bumper is to be made in such areas, the enamel will simply not stick to the dirt and peel off at the first high-pressure washing.

Should I use the putty?

In the course of such restoration work, the question arises as to the appropriateness of using this material. Do I have to use a putty on the bumper? The answer to this question is very ambiguous. So, it is recommended to level the surface in case of deep damage (for example, if black plastic is clearly visible under the LCP). If it was possible to smooth the sanding, it is not necessary to use the putty. To maximize the leveling of the surface, you should use a medium-grained sandpaper, which is worn on a flat wooden bar.

In the case of large damages without puttying can not do. Use the composition according to the instructions. First we mix the material with the hardener, then with a spatula we put it on the surface. After drying, we process the area with sandpaper. If necessary, we apply one more layer.

Please note that the putty when mixed with the hardener freezes in 3-5 minutes. After that, it turns into a real stone (at the same time the keg with the composition is very hot). Therefore, mix the paste with the hardener in small portions, otherwise we will have a lot of waste and unused material.

How is the bumper painted locally?

After leveling the surface, you can start applying enamel. For better absorption, a primer is first applied to the site. After it dries, the first layer of paint can be applied. Try to spray it as distantly as possible. The next layer will be produced from a close distance (approximately 35 centimeters). Do not hold the spray can or spray close to the surface - it may form streaks.

When the enamel has become a uniform color, it's time to make a "transition". It needs to be smoothed, so that the exterior of the car remains as much as possible factory. How to do it? How to locally paint a bumper?

The main enamel is applied under a narrow torch. Further it needs to be increased, gradually moving away from the repaired plot. If the paint is produced by a spray gun, the solvent should be mixed into the formulation. It will create a blurring effect and bind the new varnish to the old one. Simultaneously with the increase in the torch, we change the distance from which the enamel is applied. The farther we from the site, the wider the torch and the greater the distance (up to 60 centimeters).

Do not forget about the film

Note that the pollen is scattered throughout the entire area of the room. Especially if you gradually increase the width of the torch and the distance. Therefore, cover not only the lights and wings, but also the rest of the body. Otherwise it will be in colored pollen.

Polishing

At the final stage, the element is polished. And not only the site itself is processed, but the entire bumper. The polishing itself is performed on the second-third day after painting, when the composition has already taken a firm shape. The procedure can be done manually, but for the best result it is worth using a special circle. Do not use a drill or a bolt for this - the speed of these tools is too high. So you are at great risk of overheating the paint by taking off part of its layer. This will entail a complete repainting.

Conclusion

So, we found out how the partial painting of the bumper is made. Local repair is a painstaking procedure, but you can do it yourself.
