Lampwork at home: what's needed

To make jewelry and knickknacks from glass you will need:

• Propane burner.
• The respirator necessary to ensure your safety, if you intend to use silver foil, glass with enamel or silver additives, etc.
• Protective goggles to prevent damage to the eyes from radiation emanating from the flame of the burner.
• A coating or separator, which is a pasty mixture based on kaolin clay. It serves to separate from the glass of the metal spokes.
• Special steel spokes for winding molten glass on them.
• Tools used to form beads of various shapes (graphite blades, etc.).
• Ceramic blanket replacing the oven, in which will still cool hot beads, "wound" on the spokes. It prevents too rapid cooling of beads and their cracking because of the stress arising between the inner and outer layers of glass.
• To ensure greater strength of glass beads, they are annealed in a special furnace. They are slowly heated to 510-530 degrees and maintained at this temperature for 30-90 minutes. Then it is slowly and evenly reduced, and after complete cooling, the bead is considered quite ready.

Glass rods are sold by weight and by the piece (the second option is much more expensive than the first one). Abroad, the minimum weight of the order is 113 g, and in the Russian Federation - 100 g.

• Warm the tip of the glass rod, holding it over the lamp;
• When it becomes soft, spin on a steel spoke, forming a disk;

• Before the glass cools down, the product can be decorated or its outlines changed.

Glass sticks sold in stores differ in thickness. To create beads with "pimples" use the thinnest. In this case, you can choose a glass of the same or a contrasting color. Further:

• Heat the needle in the flame of the burner with a bead;
• Take her aside;
• Heat the tip of a thin glass rod;
• Put the point in the right place;
• To cut it off from a thin glass tube, return the bead briefly to the flame of the burner;
• Put the desired number of points, periodically bead into the flame, so that it does not cool;
• So that the speckles are even and rounded, they are again melted in the flame;
• From above it is possible to apply also points of other color under the same scheme.

• 006 Effetre Super Clear;
• 204 Effetre White;

Operating procedure

Before you start making beads in the technique of a lampwork (which is what you already know), light the burner and pop the glasses. Then they "pull the strings". This requires very slowly, so that the glass does not crack from the heat, they heat the stick at the very tip of the flame. A small droplet is formed and, having grasped it with tweezers, begins to pull away from the glass base to get the necessary thin "string". In this way all kinds of glass, except white, are treated.

The production of a beautiful bead with a delicate floral pattern is carried out in the following order:

• A separator is applied to the knife and its tip is heated;
• Also come with a white glass stick (204);
• Holding in a flame of a torch, and constantly rotating a spoke, wind on it necessary quantity of the molten glass.
• Beat the beads into the flame and carefully fuse, forming a ball and constantly rotating the steel spoke to prevent the glass from flowing;
• Take a string of glass "Sangria" (128);
• Melt its tip and apply to the surface of the bead 18 points, 3 groups of 6 pieces;
• Alloy all the droplets to the smoothness of the bead;
• We warm up the area with the flower and pierce its center with an awl;
• Also come with two other flowers;
• Take a string made of transparent glass;
• Reheat the area on the surface of the bead;
• In the center of the flower vertically "implant" the transparent string and make a rotational motion between the string and the fingers;
• Repeat the same actions for the 2nd and 3rd flowers;
• Take the blue string (058);
• Complement the flowers with three petals, repeating all actions, except for the step with twisting;
• Decorate the bead with dots, which are applied by a string made of glass "Helios" (144).

The last operation should be done with caution, after putting on the respirator. Points do not need to be fused. It is better that they are slightly convex.

At the final stage of work on the bead, a special "propane" technique is used:

• Cool the bead;
• Add the propane component to the burner;
• Pass the bead through the flame so that the silver-glass reaction takes place and it looks like a shiny metal.

Insert the product into the furnace to relieve the internal stress. The process is prolonged approximately 10-12 hours, until the bead is completely cooled. Then it is removed from the knitting needle and used at its own discretion.
