Japan After the War In 1905.

Military operations on land developed on the Liaotung Peninsula and in the Mukden Province. The Japanese command envisaged the active development of the operation at sea in order to ensure an unimpeded transfer of land forces to the mainland. The attack by the Japanese destroyers of the Russian squadron on the roads of Port Arthur served this purpose: two battleships and one cruiser were put out of action. On April 13, 1904, the Russian flagship "Petropavlovsk" sank on a mine and sank. On April 20, the squadron of Togo was blocked by Port Arthur. Japan managed to secure dominance at sea, as a result of which operations to transfer Japanese troops to the mainland proceeded without hindrance.

In August 1904, the first major battle took place near Liaoyang, in which the Japanese army lost 20 percent of its personnel killed and wounded. However, the Russian commander-in-chief, General Kuropatkin, fearing to be flanked, ordered his retreat. So the Liaoyang battle turned into the defeat of the Russian troops. The Port-Arthur, precipitated by the Japanese, contrary to General Nogi's calculations for the rapid surrender of the fortress, stubbornly defended himself. The total number of dead and wounded Japanese at Port Arthur was estimated at 100 thousand people. However, the treacherous behavior of the top of the Russian command predetermined the surrender of the fortress to the Japanese on January 2, 1905. The fall of Port Arthur received a wide response in Russian and international public opinion. It was regarded as a symbol of the defeat of Russian tsarism in the war.

In March 1905, the bloody Mukden battle took place. The Japanese command did not manage to reach the Russian army from the flanks. However, like Liaoyang, the tsarist generals ordered troops to retreat. This caused the upset of the front line and led to the defeat of the tsarist army under Mukden. May 28, 1905 in the Tsushima Strait there was a rout of the Russian fleet, transferred from the Baltic Sea to the Far East. Thus ended the fighting.

The war brought not only the collapse of tsarist Russia, but also the exhaustion of Japanese imperialism. By the end of the new operations, that is, by mid-1905, Japan had already spent about 2 billion yen. The total casualties killed and wounded were estimated at 700 thousand people. Japan was not able to bear the further burdens associated with the war.

The leaders of the Japanese government, who were at the same time leaders of the Japanese military, Yamagata, Oyama, Kodama, Katsura, unanimously agreed on the need for an urgent peace agreement.

In August 1905, the Russian-Japanese peace talks began in Portsmouth.
