IS Turgenev, "Living Power": a summary, an analysis

Turgenev's story "Living Power" is included in the collection of "Notes of a Hunter". Summer and half of the autumn of 1846 the well-known writer spent hunting in the family estate Spasskoye Lutovino. In October, when he arrived in St. Petersburg, he learned that N. Nekrasov and I. Panayev had become the head of the literary magazine Sovremennik, and they offered him their cooperation.

At that very time, Turgenev created his terrific story "Living Power". The analysis of the work says that in it the writer embodied the most beautiful image of a kind, long-suffering and at the same time humble Russian soul, completely submissive to the will of God.

Petr Petrovich

Barin Petr Petrovich, who came to hunt for black grouses in Belevsky district, with the hunter Yermolai fall into a heavy shower. So begins his story Turgenev ("Living Power"). The brief continues with the fact that although they were in waterproof raincoats, but the hunt was not immediately taken care of: it was uncomfortable, the branches were showered with water, and even the bosom was swallowed, and the dogs knocked off their flair from the water. And then Ermolai proposed to go to the farmstead Alekseevka, owned by mother Petr Petrovich.

When they got to the place, they found a uninhabited clean wagon, where they spent the night. The next day the weather was sunny and cloudless.

Barn

It should be noted that Turgenev was a great master of the description of landscapes. "Living Power" - a story that uniquely describes the fragrant village nature, fresh air and chattering of larks.

In general, Peter Petrovich wanted to walk, along the path he reached the apiary and there he suddenly saw a wicker shed, where hives are usually cleaned for the winter. He opened the door and looked, pulled the smell of fragrant dried herbs - mint and lemon balm. In the corner stood a stage, where a small figure could be seen, covered with a blanket.

He wanted to close the door, but suddenly he heard someone calling him. He was dumbfounded by surprise and from the fact that he saw a practically dried bronze female head with a narrow nose, thin lips, white teeth and colorless eyes, and a wisp of red hair escaped from the kerchief.

Lukerya

Pyotr Petrovich peered at his face. It was unusual, like the image from an ancient icon. The woman called Lukerya and reminded him that she had taken round dances with his mother in Spassky and she was a lover. He recognized her and immediately remembered how beautiful she was at the master's yard. She was ruddy, full of singing, laughing and dancing. All the local guys took care of her. And Peter Petrovich was then another 16-year-old boy, whom she also liked very much.

He uttered her name and asked about what had happened to her.

The writer famously twists the plot, and it becomes extremely interesting who this woman is, and what misfortune has happened to her.

She began to tell him that about seven years ago she was engaged to Vasily Polyakov, a prominent and curly barmaid lady. One night she did not sleep, she went out on the porch, and the voice of her beloved was heard. She stumbled in surprise and fell heavily. Returning to her room, she realized that as if something had broken off in her, it became hard, and became ill. The lady showed her kindness to her doctors, but they could not even diagnose her.

In the manor houses the cripples were not kept, and the sick girl was sent here to relatives. Her bride was grieving, and she married another.

Half-dead creature

Lukerya continued her story by saying that she has been lying here for many years, in the summer here, in a whip, and in the winter in the waiting room. Kind people do not forget it. Lukerya said that at first she was languid, but then she got used to it, and thought that she was not so bad, compared to deaf and blind invalids and homeless people.

She even noted that it is very easy for a healthy person to sin, and even sin itself has departed from it. Then she began to tell that priest Alexei, when he began to take communion, said that she had nothing to confess, but she reminded him of a mental sin, then the priest noted that this sin is not so great. Lukerya added that she even tries to drive her bad thoughts away from herself. Turgenev "Living Power" literally adorns the dreams of Lukerya.

Christ

She told her guest that sometimes she sings quietly to herself, and sometimes reads prayers, which also knows little: Our Father, the Mother of God, the Akathist of All the Afflicted.

Barin wanted to offer treatment, but she flatly refused and asked me not to pity her. And then she began to talk about her unusual dreams.

Once she sees a field and rye golden, in her hands a sickle that looks like a month, and next to a red dog, it tries to bite everything. And she wanted to weave a cornflower from cornflowers, but it still did not work, and then someone called her by name. She put it on her head like a kokoshnik, her sickle and everything around it beamed. And suddenly Lusha saw that the ears of Vasily were not rolling along the ears, but Christ Himself in a white garment with a golden belt. He held out his hand to her and told her not to be afraid of Him, for she was fiancee's bride, and He will have a dance in the Kingdom of Heaven and sing songs of Paradise. Then he took her hand, his wings flung open, and they flew. And the dog stayed, as it was her disease, and in the Kingdom of Heaven she will not be there any more.

The late parents

And further on, Turgenev "Living Power" is even more interesting. Lukerya also told her other dream. Her deceased parents came to her and bowed low to her. She immediately asked why they do it. They began to talk with her about the fact that she not only helped her soul, but also rescues them. Allegedly, Lukerya has already coped with her sins, but now she wins the parental sins. Then they disappeared, again bowing.

Death Woman

And then the sick girl and her third dream told. As if she sees herself on the big road in a scarf with a wand and a knapsack. It seems to go to her somewhere in the pilgrimage. And past her people, like wanderers pass. And between them she saw a woman head taller than them. She curled around them, the dress on her is not Russian, her face is lean and severe. Everyone eschews her, and she went straight to Lukerye and walked over. Lusha asked her about who she was, and she answered that she was her death. The girl was not afraid for a moment and began to pray for her to take her as soon as possible. Death turned around and said that, they say, after "Petrovka" ... And then the girl woke up.

Lusha told the master a lot of interesting things, and asked her farewell that her mother give him a little quitrent from the local peasants. They do not have a lot of land, but they would have prayed for them.

A few weeks later, Lukerya died, just after Petrovka.

Conclusion

That's how Turgenev ended his amazing story. "Living Power" (a summary reveals only a small part of the story) narrates about a real event. It is known that this story really happened to Turgenev and even the name of his heroine is genuine.

Lukerya almost does not cause pity, she even in such martyrdom glorifies God and prays to him. She knows what she's been sent for, and patiently carries her cross.

Turgenev made the work "Living Power" quite difficult. Analyzing it, after reading, every reader will necessarily ponder over the eternal and very profound questions of faith and repentance. A spiritual component is very strong in it. After all, while a person is healthy, he rarely remembers the Savior. As the people say: "Until the thunder strikes, the peasant does not cross himself." But sooner or later everyone will come to God and will ask for the forgiveness of their sins.
