How to sew Roman blinds with your own hands: step by step instruction

Curtains have always been a link in the interior, they can be pompous and pay all attention to themselves, and can be a functional element and simply complement or emphasize the interior. Any room is filled with a special atmosphere and takes on an original appearance if the windows are decorated with textiles that are in harmony with its overall decoration. Of course, you can buy curtains already ready (Roman curtains, for example), order in a sewing workshop, but the subject of real pride will only be sewn by yourself. And if you know the minimum sewing skills (you know how to use a sewing machine and make elementary patterns), then we can assume that the independent production of curtains will be successful.

What you need to consider before you sew Roman curtains with your own hands?

At first glance, the production of Roman curtains may seem unrealistic. In fact, everything is quite simple. This curtain is a rectangle from the canvas without any draperies and folds, its size strictly corresponds to the size of the window. It can transmit light, or it can completely prevent the sun's rays from entering the room. But in any case, the fabric must be dense, to make perfect and beautiful curtains, sewn by hand.

First you need to determine how the curtains will be fastened, this is what affects the necessary amount of tissue. There are two mounting options. The first option is when the curtain is attached to the window. In this case, the fabric will be near the glass, this option is perfect for windows with wide window sills. And if a set with curtains is foreseen, then you need to harmonize everything harmoniously, so that the ensemble is one. The second option is a wall mount. In this case, the width of the curtain should be larger than the opening by 20 cm, so that it is 10 cm on each side of the wall.

Determined with the size of the curtains, you need to decide whether you will use the lining or simply fold the fabric in half. What you need if you sew a curtain with a lining:

  • Tape with a base of Velcro for the width of the curtains;
  • Fabric and lining of the required size;
  • Rods (they can be wooden or metal) according to the number of folds, about 7 pieces;
  • 3 rings for each set of kulisok (diameter 10-12 mm);
  • Weighting agent for the lower part of the curtain;
  • A strap for hanging (it can be made of wood, painted or trimmed with the same cloth);
  • Cord, its length should be added as follows: 1 width of the curtains + 2 lengths (you need 3 such cords);
  • Pockets need cloth or ribbons.

After measuring the window, add 5 cm to the side seams and to the top with a bottom of 15 cm. With this account, buy the fabric and lining. Take the main fabric, mark the lines of the fold on the sides and press them, from above and from below do jogs so that you can insert a weighting agent at the bottom. Take the fabric for the lining and also it bends and presses the edges. Now put on the wrong side of the main fabric lining and stitching around all edges. To the upper part sew the tape with a sticky base.

Then, to get a beautiful drapery, you need to calculate the number of folds. The folds should be the same, so divide the entire length of the curtains by the required number of folds. For example, the length of 120 cm, you will make 7 folds, then divide 120 by 7 and get 17.1 cm. That's it at this distance will be sewn pockets for racks. Mark the lining side and sew pockets to it. They can be made from dense ribbons, from braid or from a rolled up fabric.

Now manually sew the rings as shown.

Then extend the cord in each row of rings (from the bottom up), tie a knot down below or fix the cord in any way. All the ends of the cords lead to one side, these ends can be braided into a pigtail.

Then insert into the pockets of the rods (they can be cut from the glazing bead for the windows), and in the bottom pocket you insert a weighting agent. The blind is ready! It remains to attach to the wall a prefabricated beam with adhesive tape and attach the curtain to it. In order to fix the curtain in a raised position, you need to attach a hook to the wall, on which you will wind the cord to fix it in the raised position.

Now you know how to sew Roman curtains with your own hands. It should be noted that the most elegant curtains are obtained from a rich fabric with an exquisite pattern. But this is at your discretion, your first curtain can be made from cheaper fabrics, and if everything works out, then use more expensive options.
