Grebe (Bird): description and photo

Toadstools people usually call mushrooms dirty gray on a long leg. For the similarity with them were also named very elegant water birds. Most of all resemble a poisonous mushroom large and small toadstool. The bird of plumage is dirty gray. The long neck is crowned by a head with a black-and-red collar (two tufts of black feathers), which makes this bird representative very similar to the famous forest mushroom.

Description

A large toad bird (chomga) has narrow and short wings, while the muscles that drive them make up only ten percent of the total weight (in seagulls, for example, they are 2 times heavier). The flight is fast, and not at all maneuverable: the bird, unlike the same gull, can not boast of aerobatics - it flies only in a straight line.

Landing the same and taking off for it, like an airplane - it's not at all simple. True, here a comparison with a seaplane is more appropriate. The bird does not dare to land on a solid surface, because it does not know how to extinguish the speed, due to which it would hurt heavily on the ground. It is worth noting that the water significantly softens the landing, resembling an elementary fall.

Habitat

A bird of a squad of filthy people lives on the eastern hemisphere of our planet. In the southern regions they are sedentary, in the north they are migratory.

Birds in the middle lane of Russia arrive in April. Young toadstools occupy only new nesting grounds. But the elderly are mostly justified on the old. Each pair of nesting site is quite extensive - several hundred meters in circumference. And his zealously guarded spouses. At the same time, if there are few good places for nesting, birds normally get on well in the colonies. For example, one time in the Sea of Azov on the island of Dolgy (a narrow strip of land 1.8 km long with a maximum width of 20 m), zoologists counted 165 nests.

Nest

The grebe is a bird, the nest of which is mainly located in such a way that the whole growing vegetation - reeds, reeds, sedge - protects it from wind, stranger's eyes and waves. Also, there must be free access for the bird paddling to it.

Sometimes the work of building a nest in birds alternate with takings. Usually it precedes construction. Bird of the toadstool (photos are presented in this article), having laid the next part of the building material, begins the ceremony of courtesies. So, sailing towards each other, they simultaneously lower, and then raise their heads. Then, thrusting out their chest, they rise sharply above the water, each repeating the movements of the other, as if in a mirror. Periodically, such wedding rituals are performed with a stalk in the beak. Looking at these birds with their elegant collars of feathers, remember the grandiose movements of the soloists of the ballet - very gracefully and synchronously they move.

Reproduction

The grebe is a bird, laying 3-4 greenish-white eggs in May. They very quickly become olive-brown in color from rotting plants located in their nest. Promote this and the females, covering their masonry with plants, if they leave the nest for a while. It should be noted that the female and the male are incubating the eggs. In June, the chicks already appear. They are already from birth are wonderful swimmers, their parents teach them to dive.

This is also very interesting - one of the adults slowly sails past the kids, holding the forage in the beak, then again. And the kids, in turn, try to snatch the fish. Then the grebe with her dives, inviting children to do the same. But the youth do not dare follow the example of their parents. In this case, one of them puts food on the water and issued a call: "Kwong-kwong!"

Nestlings rush the crowd, and only the best swimmer can get his deserved reward. It is touching to observe how the kids, tired of the long voyage, creep onto the back of the parent to rest, then she dives, freed from her precious burden.

Grebe (poultry): food

Parents of striped chicks are fed by worms, insects, fish. At the same time they themselves do not refuse from crustaceans, frogs, mollusks, but fish, of course, give preference. It is necessary to note one interesting feature: in gags in the stomachs you can always find a lump of feathers. A grebe is a bird that collects them on the water, and also plucks it from itself. This is explained by the fact that they live on ponds in which muddy soil.

Here you can not find pebbles that other feathers swallow to improve the grinding of food in the stomachs. Although some ornithologists do not agree with this widespread assertion. They believe that a feather lump is a kind of a sieve that holds the bones of a fish. But whichever opinion turns out to be true, chicks already from the first days of life receive from their parents with food and given feathers.

Young toadstools become independent at the age of 2,5 months. They have brown feathers at this time, and there are also not very distinct bands on the neck and head. The adult apparel will appear a little later. It should be noted that especially elegant birds in the spring. Two bundles of horns (or ears) on the head and a collar on the neck of a red color form elongated feathers. The top of the ears and the edge of the collar are black. Wings and back with transverse white stripes - dark brown color. And the lower part of the body is brilliant white.

Value for the person

Due to its satin feathering, the bird of the toad, a photo of which can be seen in this article, has been sorrowful. So, in the nineteenth century from the skins of these birds began to make clutches, hats, trim for ladies' clothing, boa.

It is interesting that the fishing of the bird's feather sometimes grew, sometimes it fell. For example, in the seventies of the last century from the Akmola region alone, about 100,000 bird skins were delivered to the Moscow market every year!

A huge number of filthy people also perished in the states of Western Europe during the next boom, which already at the beginning of this century was caused by the incredible demand for products from their fluff. Consequently, it is not surprising that grebes in Europe were a few decades ago rare. This is the fashion!
