For blondes and not only: what to do if the sound in the computer was gone

The sound in the computer was lost . What to do? The situation is SOS! Save, help though someone ...

Calm, without panic: there are no questions to which there are no right answers. In our case, we have a consequence: the sound disappeared. It remains to determine the cause, eliminate it and enjoy the result.

Correct diagnosis is the key to a successful solution of the problem. This is what we are now going to do.

  1. Make sure the speakers are plugged in, the wires are undamaged and plugged into the appropriate socket. If necessary, turn on the speakers in the electrical outlet and press the power button on them.
  2. Check the sound settings: in the lower right corner (where the clock is) there is a round speaker sign. It must be WITHOUT a red prohibition sign (a red crossed circle). If the prohibition sign is there - move the cursor and click on it with the left mouse button. Then you need to remove the checkmark next to Off.
  3. Double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner will open the mixer - the device that controls the sound. Make sure that the audio sliders are not at a minimum and there are no checkmarks near the word Off.
  4. If possible, connect known earphones / speakers to the audio output of the PC. So you can determine if the sound is lost due to broken speakers / headphones or a problem in the computer itself.
  5. There is a possibility that the sound disappeared on the PC due to infection with computer viruses. They can affect the operation of the sound driver, as a result of which the equipment may not work correctly or not work at all. It is recommended to update the anti-virus database and perform a full scan of the system by an antivirus program (preferably several).
  6. The next step is to check the operation of the equipment. Hover over the "My Computer" icon and click the right mouse button. Select "Control" from the list and click on it. Then find " Device Manager", hover over it and click with the left mouse button. After that, find the cross with the words "Sound, video and game devices" and click on it with the left button. If there are devices with a yellow warning triangle in the list, then you need to update the audio drivers.
  7. Updating the drivers. The possible reason that the sound in the computer was gone is the fledged sound drivers. To update / reinstall them, you need to insert a driver disk (included with the sound card or laptop) into the drive and install them. If there is no disk, download it from the manufacturer's website and install it.
  8. It is highly recommended to update the codecs. Where can I get them? In any search engine, enter K-Lite Codec Pack (a free set of codecs for playing most audio and video formats). Download and install the latest version of codecs.
  9. If all previous measures did not correct the situation - a radical solution to the issue could be a complete reinstallation of the system. To do this, you will need the OS installation disk and the serial number / license number.
  10. I lost sound on the PC and a complete reinstallation of the system did not help. Here you can safely assume a problem at the iron level. The reason may be a non-working port or (in very rare cases) a broken chipset. The problem with sound can be solved by replacing the sound card.

There is another option, which sometimes brings trouble - the lack of sound in the browser. Before you start troubleshooting, make sure that the sound is played on the PC (system sounds, music, video) and a problem with playing exclusively in the browser.

Troubleshooting if the sound in the browser is gone :

  • Restart the browser;
  • Clear the browser's cache and temporary Internet files ;
  • Update the flash player;
  • Update codecs;
  • Check the machine with antivirus with fresh anti-virus databases;
  • Try another browser;
  • Update / reinstall the browser.
