Fields, wheat spaces in the work of Van Gogh. Picture "Wheat field with cypresses"

Nature has always occupied a special place in the work of landscape painters. Especially willing to portray the artists of the sea, mountains, forest landscapes and endless fields, wheat including. Among such paintings on a special place is the creation of the outstanding Van Gogh "Wheat Field with Cypresses".

History of creation

Van Gogh created his painting at the end of the 19th century. At this time, the great artist was in a terrible state: at that time he had spent almost a year in a psychiatric hospital. The master was tired of his conclusion, and this picture was his attempt to return to art. Vag Gog began to spend a lot of time drawing. Especially it attracted and calmed the image of nature. Starting to paint the fields (wheat especially occupied the author), the artist began to often add to his compositions and trees. He especially liked to portray cypresses.

Symbolism

Experts explain that cypress has become for the artist a symbol of sadness and decline. Despite the fact that the tops of the cypress trees are strictly upward, on the Mediterranean coast these trees are traditionally considered a symbol of sadness. It was the cypresses that the artist depicted in the late eighties in his works. The researchers explain this by the complex emotional experiences of the master. Moreover, cypress trees are the only objects in the picture, shown vertically. The author specially depicted them separately from the field and singled out with a particularly bright color, which creates a great contrast between a clean, calm field and impetuous upward lonely trees.

In the lower part of the canvas there are bright fields, wheat or rye. It seems that they are leaning from the sudden wind. In the background are two fluttering, like flames, cypress crocks. The artist himself admitted that he was very interested in these trees. He called them gorgeous.
Very contrasting, compared with the wheat field, emerald grass. As Van Gogh said, such fields require great observation from the artist. If a long time peering into their outlines, you can see among the ranks of wheat blackberry bushes or tall grass. And the author tried to depict them from the right side of his canvas. In the foreground, at the very bottom of the picture, you can consider strokes that depict ripe berries on a bush.

Even more unusual depicted the author of the sky in his painting. On a clear, clear sky, unusual curls of lilac clouds are observed. Apparently, the author was conceived that the bad weather in the sky is the complete opposite for a calm and carefree boundless field, the wheat ears of which slightly swing in the wind. If you look carefully at the sky, then among the raging clouds you can see a barely visible crescent.

Van Gogh about his painting

Master repeatedly confessed that he had specially depicted the vast expanses of the field under a long sky. In this way, in his opinion, sadness and sadness overwhelmed him. Van Gogh believed that this outstanding picture was to express what he could not tell about himself with words. Anyway, the picture "Wheat field with cypresses" still causes interest among art critics and tourists.
