Down with the night glutton! How to deal with slugs in the garden?

Slugs (or night gluttons) are also called slugs in another way. From the point of view of zoology, this is the common name of a whole group of gastropods, which underwent evolutionary reduction or even a complete loss of the "shell" shell.

Slugs are one of the most annoying pests of all orchards and gardens. They eat tubers and foliage of potatoes, harm white cabbage and cauliflower, various root crops, young shoots of certain vegetables, seedlings, pea and bean leaves, fruits of strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as citrus (if any) and grapes! Today we will reveal to you some secrets how to deal with slugs in the garden.

Pests in life

They cause particular harm to winter rye and wheat, devouring sprouts and newly sown grains. In addition, slugs are spreaders of certain fungal infections among agricultural crops (for example, potato late blight or cabbage spotting). Gardeners who do not even think about how to get rid of slugs, observe in the morning such a picture: on the best (large) berries suddenly appear shameful fossa pits ... But that's not all! On the fruits and their leaves visible white withered traces of mucus of these pests ... It's just awful and not aesthetic! How to deal with slugs in the garden

It is interesting that various pesticides against slugs and snails practically do not give any result. The fact is that slugs have a remarkable protection from this: if a solution from chemical reagents gets to the pest, it immediately envelops itself with mucus, freeing itself from this threat. Therefore, within the framework of this article, we will not tell you how to deal with slugs in the garden with chemical means, but we will limit ourselves only to folk. Now you will learn two fairly effective ways that do not require any special expenses from you.

We make their life rough!

As you know, slugs and snails do not like rough surfaces. That's why around those plants where gastropods have been seen, it is necessary to pour something rough:

  • Coarse-grained sand ;
  • Crushed egg (or nut) shell;
  • Wood sawdust.

Such protection is quite suitable for shoots of young flower crops and vegetables. Note that you need to regularly monitor the fact that in the "rough wall" there are no loopholes through which the pest can successfully crawl to the coveted plant.

Big killer booze

If you want to know how to destroy slugs in the garden without the use of special chemicals, then this method is absolutely for you! According to German gardeners, snails and slugs are true connoisseurs of dark beers such as "porter". And it does not matter whether it's fresh or long gone out ... Let's use this addiction to your advantage! Fill several glasses with a beer and dig them into the ground flush around our plants. Especially greedy pests go to the bottom, and those that are simpler - "bow their heads" next to the murderous "potion" ... This, perhaps, is one of the most original and, most importantly, effective ways how to deal with slugs in the garden. Two or three such "feasts" will lead to the destruction of all slugs on the site. Until the end of the summer season they will not bother you exactly!
