Chess field: fantasy reality

The standard square chess field, designed for a two-man game, brings to many intellectuals boredom and despondency. Do not surprise them and the chess field, designed for a party of three or even four participants. Real chess adherents choose completely different entertainments. For example, a game in which a chess field in the form of a Klein bottle participates !

In the footsteps of the pioneers of space

For such entertainments the heroes of the Star Trek space saga and the characters of the novel "Moon Rainbow", written by our Russian science fiction writer S. Pavlov, were starving for minutes . Then, in the eighties of the 20th century, many chess players tried to recreate a three-dimensional chess field. The first and main question, which they had to solve, was the following. How many fields are on the chessboard?

With the classical version, everything is crystal clear - 64 black and white cells. But how should cells of three-dimensional fields, designed for a one-time chess game of several party members at once, look like? Enthusiasts for more than a few decades have presented a huge number of solutions and variations on this topic. There were also fields among them, which consisted of honeycombs and cells, elongated, polygonal and even round boards.

The first obstacles

In addition to the objective difficulties associated with the very embodiment of the chess board, the creators of non-standard modifications experienced many difficulties during the game. So, with the increase in the number of fields, the number of possible variations in the movement of chess pieces changed in the larger direction . Complicating their trajectory, which led to very unexpected results.

The era of computerization has made its adjustments to the world of classical chess. Many of the hitherto unresolved problems were brought to their logical conclusion. Fans of extraordinary chess, forgetting about improvised fields, moved closer to the computer monitors. Now they are subject to the choice of the level of complexity and the maximum number of players.

In chess on the calculator

As for Soviet intellectuals, they managed to play chess on the first domestic calculators "Electronics". These computers were to be programmed and had their own memory, the volume of which hardly reached one hundred bytes. With the advent of personal computers in every house of revolution in the world, chess did not happen.

Companies specializing in the production of games did not ignore chess, but these applications were just as common and customary as wooden boards. One field of the chessboard had clear parameters, which were subject to international classification. It would seem that the dreamers and seekers of unusual solutions are again forgotten. But it was not exactly like that!

The future is real

There was an extraordinary project supported by volunteers, which allowed to embody all the most daring chess fantasies in unusual game fields. And completely free of charge! The history of its creation begins in 1955, when the experimenters, like many Soviet chess players, once again became preoccupied with the freedom of choice previously absent in the chess world.

In total, they created and collected more than six hundred variants of chess fields. Thanks to their efforts, the innovative triangular chess board from the television epic Star Trek looks very, very primitive. The initiative group was invented chess on the surface of the ball, rotating gaming boards around its axis, fields interconnected by special corridors.

As a result, the player has to operate not one classic set of game figures, but three at once! There were chess, which additionally involved a cube, chips and even playing cards. And the game is blind! The names of modern chess are huge. Take at least the "Chespik", "Shatrang", "Glinsky Chess", "Chaturaja", "Fisher", "Baghaus", etc.

"Chess Glinsky"

"Chess Glinsky" is a three-color playing field, which consists of ninety-one cells. The game is designed for two players. If you do not take into account that participants are provided with additional elephant and pawn, then the set of game figures can be called classical. Additional shapes are used on cells of the third color.

The "Glinsky Chess" has received worldwide recognition in certain circles of chess players. The fans of the variation even established their own federation, in charge of which the organization of international competitions and championships.
