The beginning of the creative path

After school, Bouaye enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy at the Sorbonne, then for several years he studied music at the Paris Conservatory. But soon he decided to become a theater actor, to play the main roles and after the performance to accept congratulations from the fans. It was not vanity that spoke, Charles genuinely loved the art of Melpomene and decided to devote the whole life to the scene.

Nevertheless, in the theater Charles Bouillier did not linger, he, among other things, attracted the cinema. The debut on the big screen took place in 1920 in a low-budget film. The role of the beginning actor was determined immediately, he began to play romantic characters.

Los Angeles

In 1929, actor Charles Boyer moved to Hollywood, where his career was developed. The creative activity of the actor was divided in two, he could not refuse the French directors who invited him to their film projects, and on the other hand, Hollywood and American films firmly entered the life of the young romantic.

In 1932, Charles Bouillier, films with which he watched with interest on both sides of the ocean, starred in the film "The Redheaded Woman" with Jean Harlow, after which he left for France. While in Paris, Charles took part in the filming of the film "Lilion."

After completing the work, the actor returned to Hollywood, where he was waiting for three scenarios: "The Garden of Allah", "Caravan" and "Broken Heart." In the first film of the partner of Charles was the actress Loretta Young, in the "Caravan" of the actor fate brought with the Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn, and in the film "Broken Heart" he starred with the world famous Marlene Dietrich.

Then Charles Bouillier again found himself in France, where he played one of his best roles - Crown Prince Rudolf in the historical drama "Mayerling" from the director Litvak Anatol.

After "Meyerling" actor returns to the US for many years. He starred with Jean Arthur in the film "The Story Made at Night" and with Greta Garbo in the film "Maria Valewski". With Irene Dunne, Charles starred in the movie "Love Novel", with Joan Fontaine in the movie "Faithful Beauty", with Ingrid Bergman in the film "Gaslight".

The role of the conqueror

In autumn 1936 the film project "Conquest" was opened. The role of Napoleon was proposed by Bouaye, who considered this character as an archetypal one, and even compared his image with Jesus Christ not in favor of the latter. Charles Bouaye even refused the role, so the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer directorate had to raise the fee to the actor. The shooting started and became a real shock for Greta Garbo, who first felt that the partner was playing better than herself. To her great chagrin, critics were also unmerciful and put Charles Boyer above superstar Greta Garbo.

In 1938, the actor began to notice that his appearance was not so impeccable, he began to lose his hair quickly, his tummy appeared. The range of romantic roles has narrowed considerably, but instead of an enviable appearance, Charles gained that special charm, a mysterious aura with a light cynicism that provided him with success in the forties.

Failures

When the Second World War ended, Bouaye tried to make his career international in character, was shot in different countries, but success was not always accompanied by the actor. The film "The Arc de Triomphe" based on the eponymous novel by Erich Maria Remarque with Ingrid Bergman in the main female role fell through at the box office.

After a series of unsuccessful film projects, Charles decided to turn to television.

In 1948 in the life and career of Bouaye there was a significant event, he was awarded the Order of the "Legion of Honor".

The working schedule of the famous film actor was very dense, and yet Bouaye found time to create the television company Four Stars on TV. And in 1966, the actor entered the star structure, participating in the filming of the military drama "Is Paris Burning?".

New York

In the year 1950 Bouaye appeared on Broadway. He decided to try himself in the classics. The character that Bouaye chose was superclassical, it was Don Juan in the production of George Bernard Shaw. The performance was called "Don Juan in Hell". Two years later, Charles Boyer became the winner of the Tony Award for this role.

And again France

In 1964, the famous actor was elected vice-president of the jury at the co-festival in Cannes.

In 1966, in Charlle, his long-standing love of music awoke. The actor decided to record a solo album titled "Where is love? Let's go!". In the compilation included popular songs about the high feelings that Charles sang. His performance was more like a whisper, but of great importance was the inimitable French accent, which gave a certain charm to the recordings. It is known that Elvis Presley himself paid close attention to the album.

Personal life

Charles Boyer was married once, his chosen one was the British actress Pat Paterson, with whom the actor lived in love exactly forty-four years. And when Pat died of cancer, the husband survived his wife only for two days. Unable to endure grief, Charles committed suicide. This happened on August 26, 1978.

The last work of the actor was the film "The Matter of Time" with Lisa Minnelli and Ingrid Bergman. Bouillier played the main male role. The painting "The Matter of Time" was filmed two years before his tragic death.
