Budva Riviera: attractions

I must say that the resort towns of this region are sights. Original architecture, magnificent nature, clean air - all this attracts tourists. But there are interesting monuments of history and architecture to be seen here. We will describe some of them in our article.

Monastery of Praskvitsa

The old legend says that the monastery of Praskvica appeared on this earth in 1050. At that time the Old Slavic state of Zeta, which was located in these places, was led by Stefan Vojislav.

The ancient monastic monastery received its name because of a curious natural phenomenon. In spring, when streams flow from the mountains, the air here is filled with the aroma of peaches. In the local dialect praske means "peach".

Unfortunately, in its original form, the church has not survived to this day. In 1812, it was destroyed by French troops, and the monastery was looted. The new building was erected in the XIX century. During the design of the new church fragments of the fresco painting of the old building were used, which miraculously survived. The main work on painting the church was performed by the famous Greek icon painter Nikola Aspioti.

Monastery Praskvitsa in due time assisted Russian sovereigns. Documents from the Russian Imperial Court still remain in the vaults.

In the monastery complex there is one small temple - the Church of the Holy Trinity. Its creation dates back to the 17th century. In addition, the monastery comes to temples that are outside the monastery walls - the church of St. Stephen, the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

In 1979, during the earthquake, the monastery complex was seriously damaged. Some buildings were restored, the others are being reconstructed today. Construction works do not prevent Praskvice from remaining a functioning monastery.

The Palace of Toplice

At the end of XIX century in the New Bar there was a magnificent residence of Peter Karageorgievich - the son-in-law of the Montenegrin king Nikola I. The magnificent palace complex was later named Toplitsa. It includes the Great and Small palaces, two gardens - winter and botanical. Around the palace is a park.

Today, the local lore museum and a variety of exhibition halls operate in the palaces. In the expositions you can see historical, archaeological and ethnographic collections. They introduce the history of Montenegro in sufficient detail .

Fortress Castio

The Budva Riviera has very ancient historical monuments on its territory. To see one of them, you need to go to a small town Petrovac. In its architecture it resembles an amphitheater, as numerous villas, mini-hotels and cottages are built from the very top of the slope to the sea.

Fortress Castio is located on the city beach, in its northern part. At the top of the building today is a memorial. In it you can see a memorial plaque dedicated to the fallen warriors of Montenegro and Petrovarts in the Second World War.

The island of St. Nicholas

The island received its name in honor of the small medieval church located here. It was built in the 16th century. In addition to this church and the surrounding ancient graves, there is nothing on the island. It is completely uninhabited. Local researchers believe that in these graves rest participants of the crusades that died during the terrible plague epidemic.

The island of St. Nicholas is very picturesque. Its entire territory is covered with evergreen vegetation. Here there are various animals and birds. Perhaps, therefore, in recent years people who are tired of noise, fuss prefer to rest here. Here you can retire on small, but very cozy sandy beaches.
