BTR 82A: features, advantages, characteristics

BTR 82A - a new word in the production of heavy military equipment. This armored personnel carrier, in fact, is a deeply modernized and modified version of the BTR 80. The efforts of designers and leading military engineers have been improved and finalized several units, details, touched on updating and arming the transporter.

Armor

The inner surface of the BTR-82A case is equipped with an antipollution multi-layer protection made of synthetic material resembling Kevlar. Floor protection is provided by high-quality anti-mine rugs, which reduce the negative consequences of explosions under the wheels. Each layer forming a mat has a set of certain properties, which as a result provides reliable protection. In addition to mechanical protection, multi-layer mats also dampen the impact of the wave formed during the explosion. The special suspension brackets of the crew and landing seats also help to combat the blast wave.

Counteraction to fire

Significantly improved and fire fighting system. External armor reliably resists anti-personnel shells, and multilayered protection, in addition to its immediate function, also enhances the comfort of crew members, reinforcing the thermal insulation inside the hull. The whole complex of measures to increase the fire resistance allowed to increase the survivability of the conveyor in combat by an additional 20% in comparison with the prototype.

Combatability

The BTR 82A has a unified combat module equipped with an electric drive and a two-plane stabilizer of weapons. The main weapon of the combat module is a 30-mm cannon 2A72, in addition, there is a KPVT machine gun with a caliber of 14.5 mm and a PKTM machine gun (caliber 7.62 mm). KPVT is equipped with a single tape for five hundred rounds, and for PKTM a tape with 2000 rounds is provided. The designers envisaged the possibility of installing other weapons on the side of the armored personnel carrier.

BTR 82A was equipped with a combined sight, equally effective at any time of day. This sight has ample opportunities, thanks to the gunner TKN-4GA with a stabilizer of the review. This allows to increase the efficiency of shooting in comparison with the prototype in 2,5 times. With the new weapons, the BTR 82A, whose technical characteristics are suitable for conducting reconnaissance and sabotage measures, further expanded its capabilities in contact fights.

Running, motor and dynamic performance

Because of the strengthening of the armor, the mass of the new car has increased somewhat. However, this did not have a negative effect on the dynamic indicators. Moreover, the mobility of the machine has increased. This happened due to the installation of the KamAZ 740 diesel engine with a capacity of 300 "horses". The wheel gearboxes have been unified. The machine is equipped with shock absorbers with increased energy intensity and cardan shafts with special end splines. The leading bridges were also developed. On the new BTR-82A they were given the option of 100% mandatory locking. This at times increased the ability of the car to overcome the impassability. Among other things, a transfer case was installed on the conveyor , which has a permanent engagement. Such an improvement allows to increase the service life of gears and prevents their premature failure.

Crew Comfort

If necessary, to muffle the motor during parking, when there is no possibility to use the electric power of the battery, an auxiliary installation with a five-kilowatt power is developed, capable of powering all BTR systems. The motor resource of the main engine is not consumed at this time. For the convenience of the crew, a powerful air conditioner is provided, which allows to ensure the proper level of microclimate inside the car.

Optional equipment

The machine is equipped with a radio station, and the navigation system is responsible for the "Tron-1" orientation system, equipped with autonomous and satellite channels for receiving information. This system determines the current coordinates of the machine, calculates the range of objects, records the route of movement.

Armored personnel carrier in armament

On February 7, 2013, Sergei Shoigu signed an order to deploy a new BTR 82A into service with the Russian army . The characteristics of the armored vehicle allow it to be used in several service arms, including landing and reconnaissance.

Recently, the public's attention was again drawn to the armored personnel carrier in connection with the military operations in the Donbass. According to the Ukrainian side, BTR 82A in Ukraine was seen in the militia's arsenal. Official Russia refutes this information, citing the fact that this model of the transporter was not exported abroad.

Currently, an even more advanced version is being developed - the BTR 90. Most likely, the new car will be another, heavier and more expensive class. And in the arsenal of the "mass" army there will be transporters of brands 80 and 82.
