Belief and the legend of the flowers of pansies

In spring, in many gardens, a flower of pansy blossoms pleasing to the eye with a variety of colors. Legends and beliefs of different peoples tell a lot of interesting stories about the origin and name of these plants. We will also get acquainted with them.

Description of the flower

Five delicate, more often purple-yellow-white-blue, petals are located on a branchy stalk about twenty centimeters high and resemble hearts in shape. Large, surprisingly tender flowers on the plant alternate with each other from spring to mid-summer. Such a colorful carpet literally bewitches.

Legends and beliefs about the colors of pansies give a different interpretation of their appearance. Many of the species that are bred today are hybrids obtained by crossing their wild ancestors with garden violets. And the first results of such selection appeared in the XVI century at the court of Prince Wilhelm Hesse-Kassel. Today it is one of the most common garden flowers. Violet (trio) tricolor, auburns, brothers, Ivan-da-Marya - these are the most common names for this beautiful plant.

Russian legend about pansies

There lived a kind, trusting, pure-hearted girl. Once she met a guy who came to their village. Anyuta fell in love with a young man, believed in his sincerity. Before leaving he promised to return and take her with him. Every day a girl went out on the road and waited for her beloved, but she never showed up. Everything ended tragically: the girl withered from anguish and died. And on her grave rose amazing plants with three-colored petals. According to the people, their coloring correlates with different periods of Anjuta's life. White color symbolizes the heroine's hope for reciprocity and happiness at the very beginning of the relationship. Yellow - a surprise that the groom does not come for a long time. Violet is sadness, the collapse of all dreams and death.

This legend about the pansy flower has other variations. The first says that a rich young man was married against his will to another, and the girl died of pain and sorrow. On the second - the beloved went to war and died there. And Anyuta eventually turned into a flower, which still continues to wait for the dear one at the road.

The story of the brothers

Belarusians, Ukrainians and Poles have their own version of the origin of the flower of the pansy. Legends and beliefs of these peoples are also somewhat different, but their essence is in the sinful love of a brother and sister. The most touching story is the time of the Turks' raids.

The invader army attacked the Ukrainian village and captured civilians. Near the beautiful black-browed girl, burst into tears, was a young Janissary. The captive pleased him, and he supported her all the way. And then he offered to run, promising to return her to his homeland and marry. During one of the halts, they managed to do what they had planned. And after they became close, the Janissary told the story of his life. That he was born in the same place where his friend's house was. What else the child was captured. That his father was a blacksmith, and next to the house grew a pear and a raging torrent. The girl understood here that the Janissary was her missing elder brother, and she burst into tears. They realized the sin they committed, and that happiness is now impossible. Young people turned into beautiful flowers, which the people began to call loving brothers.

Myths about Aphrodite and Venus

Long ago, the gods played a big role in people's lives. Faith in their supernormal abilities, magical power, the ability to interfere in earthly life gave rise to many interesting stories. Among them is the legend of the flowers of the pansy, which explains why the plant has this form.

Beautiful Aphrodite decided to swim on a hot day. And although she chose a pond hidden from view, she soon noticed that a whole crowd of people admired her admiringly. The indignant goddess turned to Zeus with a request to punish the dared to do such an act. But the Thunderer that day was in a good mood and therefore simply turned curious into flowers.

The ancient Romans have a similar myth about how men were peeking behind the bathing Venus. All of them suffered the same fate.

By the way, this legend about a plant of pansies echoes the common history in which an ordinary earthly woman turned her eyes to what was forbidden. The punishment for her was turning into a flower, which in color actually resembles a human face.

And from all these stories one more symbolical value of pansies arose - curiosity.

The Myth of Jupiter Love

Another ancient Roman legend about pansies is also interesting.

One day Jupiter descended to the ground and, under the guise of a shepherd, went to the temple of Juno. Among other girls, he noticed the daughter of the Argonian king - Io, who performed the sacrifice. Proud and unapproachable, she immediately conquered the god and herself felt his feelings towards him. But soon on secret meetings learned Juno, and Jupiter, fearing for the life of his beloved, turned a girl into a white cow. Now she spent days, unknowingly, walking around the palace in Argos. Finally Io found a way to explain to the king who he really is. Observing the sufferings of his father and daughter, Jupiter turned for help to the goddess of the earth. She gave the girl an incredibly beautiful and tasty flower. And its coloring became a symbol of the arisen love triangle.

This is one of the most common versions about the fate of Princess Io. A similar myth, again, can be found among the ancient Greeks. There the girl, who was carried away by Zeus, punished Hera.

German legend about the flowers of pansies

This is the story of the wicked stepmother. It is associated with the unusual structure of the flower. According to legend, there lived a wicked stepmother - it is symbolized by the lower petal. The biggest and most beautiful. The woman had two daughters - middle lobes. Well, as in any folk tale, all the misfortunes fell on unfortunate stepdaughters. Therefore, the upper petals on the flower are the smallest and faintest. But this is not the end of the legend. Further, it says that initially a large petal was on top, and the symbols of stepdaughters were below. To somehow punish the evil stepmother and ease the life of orphans, God turned the flower. As a result, close to the stepmother were sharp spurs. And her favorite daughters got not so attractive tendrils. So the legend about the flowers of the pansies became an expression of popular sympathy for the grief and suffering of the orphans.

The power of suggestion

If any legend about the flowers of pansies, given here, most often raises doubts about its reliability, then the traditions formed on their basis are widely accepted for many. For example, until recently in Russia there was an opinion that this plant is dead, because its place is not in the garden, but on the grave. For the same reason, the French and in our time never give a bouquet of white pansies.

An interesting find was found in the Trappist monastery, which operated in the Middle Ages. On his wall the artist painted a flower of pansies and a dead head, while making an eloquent inscription: "Remember death".

But nevertheless in most cases this plant has an optimistic meaning and symbolizes true love. So, in England, pansies were made to give a loved one on Valentine's Day. In France, they are still used for fortune-telling fortunes. And in Poland, there is such a way of spelling: to squirt the juice of a flower on the eyes of a sleeping youth and to appear before him at the moment of his awakening.

Thus, in many countries the popular folk legend about the spring flower of the pansy has given rise to various prejudices and beliefs, some of which are still valid today.

It's curious

Very interesting and informative is every legend given here about pansies for children. In addition, the people's memory is stored and the real facts about the wonderful flower. So, in France, pansies were given the name pensee, which means "thought, thought". Many associate this with the structure of the capsule with seeds, which, by the way, scatter over distances several times the size of the plant itself.

In the Christian world, pansies are sometimes called the flower of the Holy Trinity. Indeed, if you look closely, at the base of the petals you can see a triangle - a symbol of the all-seeing God's eye. And the rays that depart from him are allegedly the faces of the Trinity.

Pansies were the favorite flower of Josephine. In history, they are known as the emblem of the Napoleonic dynasty.

Dried flowers of pansies are often used in the treatment, since they contain a lot of salicylic acid.
