The variety of cities in the Crimean peninsula is impressive. Simferopol, Sevastopol, Dzhankoy, Evpatoria and, of course, Kerch. This city is located on the shore of the Kerch Strait and is some kind of gate connecting Crimea with the Krasnodar Territory. It turns out, as it were, a transition: the city of Kerch-Russia is a continental one. This port city, although slightly smaller than the same Sevastopol (which, incidentally, is a strategic port), but the significance is even greater for the entire peninsula.

History of an unusual city

Kerch appeared about seven thousand years ago, but it can boast of the status of the city for more than two and a half thousand years. For this reason, the settlement is included in the list of the most ancient settlements of the world, together with Rome and Athens.

There were wars in the territory of Kerch, and various famous battles. This city was considered a tasty morsel for the conquerors. For example, the Byzantine rulers tried to appropriate this territory, and even gave their name - Bosporus. Nevertheless, the Slavs conquered the city and gave it the name of Korchev. But after the battle with the Khazars happened, and they, in turn, renamed the settlement in Cherkio. Then the city withdrew into the possession of Turkey and became known as Karsh. Only after the Russo-Turkish war, after returning to the facilities of the Russian Empire, the settlement acquired its present name - Kerch.

The city took part in the Great Patriotic War. It was something of an arena for the struggle of Russian and German troops. More than 85% of the buildings were destroyed, the population of Kerch lost fifteen thousand people. In view of these events, in 1973, at last, Kerch was given the title of Hero City.

Location of Kerch

The city spreads on the shore of the Kerch Strait. On the territory of the village, in its very center, stands the majestic mountain Mithridates. Kerch is a unique city, if only because in this locality there is the easternmost point of Crimea - Cape Lantern.

The total area of Kerch is 108 square kilometers. An impressive number of different small rivers, mud volcanoes and salt lakes have been found on the territory of the city for a long time.

The weather in Kerch is usually stable, without sharp changes. The climate is moderately continental. According to statistics, the winter is usually relatively warm, but summer is often hot, even sultry. So people who adore the heat, the weather in Kerch will necessarily have to taste.

On the territory of the city the steppe type of vegetation predominates, sometimes alternating with meadow. Ecology Kerch is significantly supported by the creation of large parks and quiet squares. They own approximately 28% of the entire population center. Population and national composition

Thanks to such a rich historical heritage, the settlement is highly multinational. According to general information, about 80 most diverse nationalities live on the territory of Kerch. Among them:

• Russian - 78%;
• Ukrainians - 15%;
• Tatars - 2%;
• Armenians and other nationalities.

The population of Kerch at the time of 2016 was almost 149 thousand people. If you bring statistics from 1979 to the present, it will be seen that the number of citizens living is relatively stable year on year.

Citizens of working age make up about 40% of the total number of people. The unemployment rate does not exceed 1.5 percent. This suggests that the population of Kerch is almost completely employed. This is not surprising, because laying communications requires a large amount of labor. But after the completion of the bridge, it is possible that the employment center (Kerch indeed can expect such a course of events) will prove to be an absolutely superfluous institution, because, as with open vacancies, there will be a minimum.

Economy of Kerch

In the field of industry, the city has flourished since the 1960s. Shipbuilding and metallurgical plants at that time became city-forming enterprises.

In addition, there is a sewing factory in Kerch for sewing children's clothes. The factory has its own online store, which distributes products to CIS countries. Also on the territory of the village there are other industrial enterprises.

For a long time a significant place in the life and activity of the city was occupied by fishing. At the enterprises connected with a fish economy, the population of Kerch still takes practically all workplaces.

Scientific and educational institutions

Like any other city, Kerch has on its territory a large number of schools, they are in the village 28. This is quite commensurate with the area and the population. In addition to them there are 6 vocational schools. There is also a medical school in which anyone can get an education by profession of a nurse or a paramedic.

The administration of Kerch takes care of its citizens, therefore there are quite a few good kindergartens on the territory of the village. All of them are renovated in accordance with the norms and current legislation.

From secondary specialized educational institutions it is possible to allocate still ship mechanical and polytechnical technical schools. But still much more in Kerch higher education. The main one is KSMTU - Kerch State Maritime Technological University. Earlier it was called KMTI. The remaining eight higher educational institutions are branches or branches of other universities located in Russia, Ukraine and the Crimea.
