An excursion into the past: vignette - what is it?

We are already accustomed to that, in the kindergarten of the senior group, after the end of the primary school, and then further, after the 9th grade, our daughters and sons "throw off" on the vignettes. Colorful albums with photos are very popular the last ten to twelve years. And this is understandable. After all, such memoirs are pleasant to take in hands, they not only perfectly preserve the pictures, but also by themselves, made skillfully and tastefully, they resemble true works of art.

Etymology of the word

Let's first find out: vignette - what is it? Where does the word come from in our language and what does it mean? By origin it is French and first designated a figure that was placed in a manuscript or printed book for decoration. He could be in front of the text, on a specially assigned page, or precede it, on the same sheet with him. Or it was the frame of the page. By the way, after all, the Old Russian annals were decorated with various ornaments! But then they did not know, vignette - what is it? And there was not even a word in the Old Russian language! Subsequently, with the development of the printed matter, a great variety of fiction and journalism, these drawings began to acquire a plotline. Now they were placed before the text of the work as a headband or on the title page. Sometimes, according to the idea of the author or illustrator, a vignette (that this symbolic figure is already understandable) played the role of ending, helping to understand the meaning of the poem, story, article.

Image Features

It is due to symbolism, abstractness, vignette images can not be perceived as illustrations to works. As a rule, they were based on mythical, fantastic, fantastic elements and subjects. Sometimes included images of a person or an animal. Such drawings had to make the book more colorful, attractive, to improve its design. Especially typical was the design for volumes of poems. In the genre of vignette, such great Russian artists as Benois, Shekhtel, Lancere worked. They have glorified this art form, leaving surprising in their craftsmanship and talent samples. The greatest flourishing achieved in the era of the Rococo vignette. What did this give to the genre? The pictures began to be painted in the style of sea shells - with various curls, voluminous details, unusual, often pretentious forms.

Vignette today

Over time, vignettes as pictures for framing the text went out of fashion, but found a "second life", becoming an ornament of paintings of small forms, as well as artistic photographs. In recent years, this word has also been called large-format albums, successfully replacing the usual, boring sadovskie and school folders with pictures. Children's vignettes combine innovative design, colorful polygraphy, various combined images made in the now popular 3D format. Individual portrait, group, using the techniques of "Photoshop" turn each page into a unique image, harmoniously combining the realism of "nature" and the creative imagination of the embodiment of the idea. The hero of the photo can, for example, stroke a lion or stand on top of a snow-covered mountain, and the picture will look like "real". Even greater scope for imagination is provided by the school vignette. Years of study, friends, unusual situations, the wishes of classmates - all this can be included in the content of the album, and he will keep a good memory of the most joyful and brightest period of our life.

Who will argue that the vignette is a wonderful invention ?!
