Fabric tartan (tartan): features

Fabric tartan has not lost relevance for several centuries. The name clearly indicates the country of origin. She also has a second name - tartan, which immediately sends us to the era of historical novels and films, when the cell was a kind of passport and the permanent possession of every inhabitant of Scotland.

History

To produce a checkered woolen fabric the Scots have been able for more than two millennia. The origin of the word "tartan" is explained differently, sometimes it is associated with the Old French word "cloth", sometimes with the Gaelic expressions "the color of the terrain" and "criss-cross".

The colors and complexity of the pattern used to speak directly about the status of a person. The poor wore uniform dark clothes, and the royal tartan consisted of seven colors. Sheep wool was stained with natural dyes made from plants. Saturated blue, green, red colors could afford only representatives of the upper class. Bright shades were mostly typical for military and solemn clothes, and reserved colors for hunting clothes.

Over time, the tissue of the Scotch cage became a sign of the generic belonging. In those days, clothes from such cloth were mostly worn by men, and now the famous kilt is known all over the world. It is a peculiar combination of a scalloped skirt and a cloak. Over time, checkered tissues appeared for women - lighter and not so contrasting.

In the middle of the 18th century, the Scotch fabric, associated with the Jacobite mutiny, was banned. The revival of Scottish traditions occurred in the XIX century and was associated with the meeting of King Edward IV with writer Walter Scott. Tartan, symbolizing romanticism and freedom of love, spread throughout old Europe. Over time, like other woolen fabrics, the tartan became very popular material for everyday wear, and later from it began to sew uniform dresses for school girls.

Scotch today

Nowadays, wool fabric in a cage is created on the same principle as many years ago. On the loom there is a set of painted threads, they are intertwined first in a straight line, and then in the reverse order. So the main feature is formed - diagonal symmetry. Thanks to this, the tartan looks very nice when cutting on the scythe.

There is a World Register of Scottish tartans, which today has 3,300 patterns and is no longer replenished. There is also the Scottish registry, which already includes 6,000 varieties. All new patterns are registered in it. By the way, under the category of "Scotch" can not only get woolen fabrics, but also cotton, artificial and blended.

Fabric Scot is classified also in density, it is measured in ounces per yard 2 .

Fashion in the cell

Tartan became a fashion classic. From it they sew coats, suits, dresses in different styles:

  • Kezhual;
  • Office;
  • Urban;
  • Preppy;
  • Vintage and others.

Have chosen this pattern and representatives of a variety of subcultures, ranging from punks and emo, ending with fans of Japanese street style Koh Gal.

Fabric tartan fell in love with designers. "Barberry" built a black-and-white-sand combination with a red thread just in the cult. A favorite pattern of ancient kings, consisting of red and blue cells, is today known to the world under the name "Royal Stewart" and is again at the peak of popularity.
