Algorithm for measuring the patient's pulse. Pulse Measurement Technique

What can the patient's pulse speak about? Measuring it, doctors can judge the presence of various heart diseases. Today we learn what the pulse measurement algorithm is and what methods of its determination are available. Except that it can be accurately calculated in a hospital, a person can also independently test it at home without any problems. To do this, follow the recommendations and rules that are described in this article.

Places on the body where you can check the pulse

To probe the trembling fluctuations a person can independently by the method of palpation, that is, with the help of tactile sensations. Find the pulse on your body in these places:

"The wrist is the most common way."

"On the brachial artery."

- In the armpit.

- At the temples.

- On the neck.

- On the lower jaw: between its edge and the corner of the mouth.

- In the groin.

- Under the knee: in a hole in the fold of the foot.

- On the feet: above the arch, in the middle of the climb or behind, just below the ankle.

Preliminary stage of determining the pulse of a child

In order to perform the manipulation, the nurse should inform her parents (or one of them) and get their consent to measure the pulse in children. The algorithm of the medical worker's actions is simple:

  1. After receiving "green light" from the side of mom or dad, a specialist must necessarily wash and dry his hands.
  2. Then the nurse conveniently puts or sets the child (depending on his age), while the hands and forearm of the boy or girl should not hang in the air.

The main stage of the event

What is the pulse measurement technique? The algorithm for the main part of it is as follows:

  1. The right hand should cover the child's brush in the area of the wrist joint. The thumb should be identified on the back of the forearm, and the rest should feel the radial artery that pulses, and then press it to the radius bone.
  2. Then the nurse must take a watch or a stopwatch and count the number of fluctuations strictly in 1 minute.
  3. Then the expert evaluates the intervals between pulse waves. If the intervals are equal, then the oscillations are rhythmic. If the intervals are not the same in time, then the pulse is arrhythmic, that is wrong.
  4. Then the pulse filling is determined by the amount of arterial blood that forms a rhythmic wave. If it is perfectly felt, it means that the pulse is full. If the volume of circulating blood decreases, then the fluctuations of the arteries are empty.
  5. The final algorithm for measuring the pulse: the expert evaluates the voltage. To do this, he squeezes the radial artery until the pulse disappears. If it disappears with moderate contraction, then the pulse is of satisfactory tension. If the artery disappears with a strong squeezing - the impulses of blood are strengthened.
  6. By filling and tension, we can speak about the magnitude of jerky oscillations. The pulse of good saturation and intensity is called large, and the weak pulse is small. If the number of such waves is barely determined, then such oscillations are called filamentary.

The final stage of the event

  1. The nurse records the pulse rate in a special temperature sheet.
  2. The specialist informs the parents of the child about the results of the study.
  3. A nurse washes her hands with soap under running water, and then treats them with an antiseptic.

The pulse measurement algorithm on the radial artery is painted thoroughly. Now it is worthwhile to find out how else it is possible to determine the rate of blood impulses.

Note

The algorithm for measuring the pulse of a child is not the same as for an adult. To count jerky oscillations should be strictly for 1 minute, because the children have an irregular pulse.

In adults, the method of checking for the radial artery is mainly used.

In children, the pulse can be examined on the shoulder, dormant, temporal, femoral arteries, as well as on the beat of a large fontanel.

Determination of the norm of the pulse of blood on the femoral artery

The algorithm for measuring the pulse in this case is quite simple:

  1. The patient is asked to lie down or sit comfortably.
  2. The nurse starts to manipulate two fingers (index and middle) in the middle of the inguinal fold.
  3. After that, the specialist assesses the presence of a pulse of blood and its frequency.

Heart rate measurement: the algorithm of the popular method

A well-known method for determining the pulse of blood is the study of pulsation of the radial artery. A person at home can conduct such a procedure.

  1. You should rotate your left hand with your palm up. "Why not the right?" - you ask. The fact is that on the right limb the pulse can be traced worse, since the left hand is located closer to the heart, and the right hand is further away from it.
  2. The index and middle finger of the right hand should be easily applied to the wrist of the left hand, slightly below the base of the thumb. In this case, the hand that is closer to the heart, should lie on a horizontal surface (on the table, for example).
  3. Now you should feel under the pads of the fingers of the artery: it should be felt like a thin tube under the skin.
  4. Then you need to lightly press on it and feel the tremors of blood.
  5. Now the most important thing: a person must calculate the number of strokes that will occur within 1 minute. The patient's pulse measurement algorithm can be slightly broken, that is, instead of 60 seconds, you can count 30 seconds, and then simply multiply the number by 2.

Important instructions

  1. To determine the fluctuations of the heart with the thumb of the second hand is incorrect, since then the ripple is felt very strongly. The person in this case can easily make a mistake. Therefore, it is necessary to perform manipulation with the help of the index finger and the middle finger.
  2. Undoubtedly, you can also find the pulse on the second hand. However, it will then be weaker than on the left, or it will not be felt synchronously, with delay. But a different pulse on both hands indicates that the patient has a malfunction in the cardiovascular system.

Determination of the norm of the pulse of blood on the carotid artery

The measurement of cardiac fluctuations in this case is justified if a person, for example, has lost consciousness. A radial artery on the wrist may not be probed. Therefore, it is important to check the pulse on the carotid artery. And this is done like this:

1. The patient is placed on his back, and then the person allowed to perform this manipulation, with his fingers (index and middle), folded in parallel, slowly passes the patient's neck downwards. It should move from the base of the lower jaw to the place where the throat is located.

2. If a person does everything right, then the patient's pulse should be probed in a small hole.

3. It is forbidden to push the area that is being tested too tightly during the exercise, as this can lead to blood circulation disorders and even to fainting.

Measurement of the pulse with a special device

In addition to palpation of the above areas of the human body, the blood pulses doctors determine using a heart rate monitor, called a heart rate monitor. The sensors of this device are attached to the patient's chest, to the finger of the hand or to the earlobe. It is not difficult to find a pulse with this device. It is enough to fix it with a strap of a special design, after which the meter will determine the patient's pulse rate.

Heart Rate

- For an adult healthy person - 60-90 beats per minute.

- For athletes, athletes - 40-60 fluctuations in 60 seconds.

- For newborn babies - 120-160 beats per minute.

- For children from 2 to 7 years - 75-120 fluctuations.

- For children over 7 years - 75-110 beats in 60 seconds.

Now you know that it is possible to measure the pulse not only in the walls of a polyclinic, but also at home. Especially there are several ways to diagnose. But the most popular method is to measure the pulse on the radial artery. It is also important to know the rate of fluctuation for different categories of the population, since in children and in adults these parameters are different.
