Variation belt: dismantling and structural features

Nowadays variators are becoming more widespread. Despite the fact that they began to be used for a long time, now they were appreciated. Like all devices, they are susceptible to breakage.

Particular attention should be paid to the features that should be taken into account, replacing the variator belts. Their dimensions depend on the purpose of the product. The most widely used models were the ones with a height and width of 20 mm and 45 mm, respectively.

Work is done in a timely manner with the help of certain tools. A belt with a large output will not properly transmit the turning moment to the pulleys, due to which the power is lost. It is recommended to replace it in specialized workshops with trusted specialists, but in the absence of such an opportunity, it can be done independently.

Variator Strap: Construction

The design includes steel stripes, covered with wedges. On average, the belt is replaced every 200-250 thousand km. If the operating rules are not respected, it may be damaged due to metal fatigue. The material is stretched, and the distance between the plates increases, which leads to a breakage. In this case, towing the car is not advisable, since the elements of the crumbling belt can damage other parts, such as pulleys or gears.

Serious consequences can be caused even by the failure of the speed sensor if it fails with rapid movement and the electronic control unit moves the pulleys to the emergency position. In this situation, the variator belt can both deform and tear. If the car moves at an average speed, then the load on the belt will be minimal. Since the sensor is made on the principle of Hall, such situations occur often. When buying a used car, the sensor is recommended to be changed first. This will not be difficult, since it is fixed on top of the case. Also, variator belts of snowmobiles can be damaged and at low speed, for example, when striking a curb during the reverse course.

Carrying out work

To replace the belt, you will need a shock screwdriver, several clamps, a hammer, keys, a clean surface of the desktop and several empty containers for storing the removed small parts. It is recommended to place the tanks in a convenient order as the parts are removed, and special moments should be recorded or photographed. All this reduces the risk of error when assembling the variator, because the construction is dismantled in one day, and you can start assembling only in a week.

To begin with, the bolts for securing the camshaft cover are loosened, they must be at least six, after which the cover itself is removed. The helical gear is removed, all the removed parts are added to the previously prepared containers, after which you must turn the box and get the part of the body together with the shaft. Further, the bolts are loosened on the perimeter, the lid is gently taped with a hammer and carefully removed. Also do not forget about the gear. The pump mount is carefully unscrewed, and the chain with the gear is pulled out. Now the pump cover can be easily removed, you need to take the shaft and gently pull upwards.

Reverse assembly is also not difficult. Dismantling of this side of the variator box is completed, it is necessary to lay it aside for a while and start to unscrew the cover. It is fixed fairly tightly, so you need to squeeze it, you need a conventional screwdriver. After removing the cover, the main elements of the variator will open: two shafts and a variator belt. With the help of clamps (the best option is plastic), the belt is compressed, this will prevent its destruction during further analysis. The belt is pulled out together with pulleys from the variator, thus it is necessary to watch, that in the opened apertures there was nothing superfluous. After that, pulleys are removed from the belt. It only remains to replace the variator belt with a new one and reassemble all the parts.

Features

It is worth paying attention to the material used. The thing is that an ordinary rubberized textile belt, which is used for air conditioning or generator, is not suitable for work, as it is characterized by rapid wear.

Scooter belt, having a special structure, do not have these drawbacks. In automotive variators also a wide metal chain consisting of plates is used as a belt. For its lubrication, it is recommended to use a special liquid that does not allow the chain to slip.
