Tula. The Cathedral of the Assumption: address, photo

In the ancient Russian city of Tula, so glorious with its skillful gunsmiths, samovars and gingerbread, there is a remarkable temple, the main chapel of which is consecrated in honor of the great feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. He received great fame not from the antiquity of the building (he was built a little more than a century ago) and not the great names of historical figures who visited it, but the remarkable architecture that put it on a par with the best monuments of Russian temple architecture.

Care of the Empress Mother

In 1791, pious Empress Catherine II ordered to allocate money for the restructuring of the Church of the same name, which had decayed by that time, of the eponymous convent of the glorious city of Tula. These funds did the right thing, because the old building, when it was built, and when it was built (documents about that did not survive), was completely useless. For many years the walls of this two-story building have settled into the ground so much that on the rainy autumn and spring days the first floor was mercilessly flooded with water.

In 1792 it was dismantled and in the same place erected a new, also stone, but one-story and three-pripodelnuyu. Supervised by the Tula civilian governor Andrei Ivanovich Lopukhin. She served people and God until 1857, until she began to show signs of dilapidation, somewhat strange for a stone structure that had not stood for seventy years. However, the measures were taken: the building was strengthened and enlarged, which, as it appears from the documents, came to an even worse state. The usual thing - they wanted it better, but it turned out ...

Cathedral - beauty and wonder

However, they did not become discouraged, and they waited another forty years and, blessing, dismantled the temple to its foundations. At the beginning of the next century, or rather in 1902, a new construction was erected in its place. This time, a truly beautiful temple turned out, known today as the Uspensky Cathedral (Tula). Very successfully found a combination of walls, laid out of red brick, and black domes, crowned with gold crosses and crescents. Two-storey, built in pseudo-Russian style and richly decorated, it has become a real decoration, which Tula is rightfully proud of.

The Cathedral of the Assumption Cathedral is famous for its interior. It accurately reproduces the frescoes made by Victor Vasnetsov at the design of the famous Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev. The level of performance is so high that it suggests the participation in their creation of masters, formerly employed in the painting of the Kiev cathedral. Work on them was completed in 1909, as evidenced by the surviving inscription on one of the walls.

The Epoch of Destruction

The Bolsheviks, who seized power in 1917, abolished the monastery, its inhabitants were dispersed, and the Uspensky Cathedral (Tula) was closed down. Since the primary task was to destroy everything that had been created before, and, as stated in their hymn, "up to the ground", they crashed without thinking. Irreversibly, hundreds of masterpieces of Russian temple architecture died in those years, but despite their evil will, the Uspensky Cathedral (Tula) stood.

In the thirties, he was repeatedly tried to blow up, but the walls, covered with powder smoke, stubbornly refused to surrender. It was all the more surprising that the two buildings, formerly erected on this site, prematurely decayed and threatened to collapse without any explosions. It remains to be wondered whether the diligence of the builders of this "third temple" gave its walls such unprecedented strength or the Lord did not let the black business happen and thanks to Him the ancient Tula did not part with its holy.

The Cathedral of the Assumption Cathedral stood, and, having failed to destroy it, the city authorities decided to use the building for their purely mundane purposes - they placed in its walls an archive. But since the Soviet institution could not be under the canopy of domes and crosses, which were then, as they say, a relic of the past, they were demolished, hopelessly violating the harmony of the whole architectural composition.

The difficult process of revival of the shrine

The Uspensky Cathedral (Tula), whose photo is presented in the article, was returned to believers as a result of new trends brought with it by perestroika, but this process proved to be long and complex. In the late eighties, it was possible to reconstruct the facade of the building, and, despite the fact that it still had an archive, to install the roofs destroyed in the thirties, domes and crosses. The external appearance of the building in many respects began to resemble the one on the eve of the catastrophe of 1917.

Only in September 2006, when all formalities were settled, the ancient Tula regained its sanctity. The Cathedral of the Assumption Cathedral after many decades again became the property of the church. In January of the following year, the diocesan Bishop Metropolitan Alexy consecrated his lower warm temple, and in May the upper church was consecrated. This event is considered to be the day of the completion of the restoration work and the beginning of a new era in the life of the cathedral.
