Transmission oil 75W90, 85W90, 80W90 or 75W140 - which one to choose?

Spreading for transmission oil 75W90 an uncommon amount, usually motorists are sure that this lubricant of acceptable quality. You can try to go even further and choose a fluid that would fit a specific model of the car, and the money was not too expensive.

Transmission classes

Greases of the group Gl belong to the hypoid. That is, they lubricate the rear axles and separate gear boxes of such domestic brands of cars as "Zhiguli", "Niva", "Volga". For trucks, of course, it also works, but it will be too expensive.

The most common is gear oil 75W90 grade viscosity. Among the exceptions were oils of the brand "Castrol". Their line includes greases 85W90 and more liquid 80W90. In addition, next to the GL 5 75W90 oil transmission gear 75W140. This last version of the viscosity is not very suitable for Russian cars. It is usually poured into the rear and all-wheel drive versions, as well as in the model with a lockable differential. They, most likely, perfectly serve on the "Patrol" or "Land Cruiser", but for the domestic will be too thick. Fill them with the normal mode of operation there is no sense. But if the rear axles "sang", then such a lubricant fluid can come just right.

But if an inexpensive mineral water does its job well, why waste extra money on synthetics?

Transmission oils of different viscosities

Among motor oils, an entirely synthetic synthetic base has long won the greatest popularity. They are also distributed transmission oil 75W90, 85W90, 75W140. Most synthetic lubricant fluids can be used for a whole year. Even at very low temperature values, they will produce good functional results. For example, if you compare the mineral water 85W90 with negative twelve degrees with synthetic 75W140 in the frost at forty degrees, the result on the viscosity will be virtually indistinguishable. And if they are placed in the same temperature regime by -20 degrees, then the result will be different in 30-50 times. This is a very serious reserve. It turns out that in one case the engine will start up barely, and in another - almost like in the warm season.

Tests of lubricating fluids

Advantages will be revealed even more if they are tried in operation under extreme conditions. With heavy loads, lubricating liquids become more liquid. Therefore, the relevant tests were carried out. Of course, it was expected that those who have a higher quality, will behave better here and show the most persistent results. And it happened.

The clear result will be seen in the figures. The welding load on a conventional 4-ball friction machine reveals the ability to keep a critical load. On it, the oils are divided into groups. Thus, GL 3 has a minimum value of 2760N, gear oil 75W90 - GL 4 - 3000N, and GL 5 - 3280N.

Results of tests

And the results of the tests were as follows. The cheapest viscosity oils 85W90 had from 2607 to 4635N. The average figure for them is 3827N. It would seem that it exceeds even GL 5. But let's look further. "AvtoVAZ" requires a transmission with an indicator above 3483N, and AZLK - 3924N. To meet such requirements, the result is no longer seen as excellent.

Another test oil had a viscosity of 80W90. Its average value was given by the number 4122N, which is much better. An even better result was shown by transmission oil 75W90. Here the values ranged from 3685 to 5204N, and the average figure was 4508N, which, of course, was encouraging.

The best results, of course, were given the viscosity of 75W140. However, such a transmission is hardly necessary for everyone.

So which oil to fill?

Summarizing the above, it can be concluded that if the operation of the vehicle is supposed to be at a temperature not lower than -12 degrees, then it is possible to do oil with a viscosity class of 85W90. This is the most inexpensive option, and domestic production will be quite cheap.

If the temperature in the area drops to 26 degrees below zero, you must purchase 80W90 oil. With it at such a mark, the car will feel more confident.

Well, transmission oil 75W90, reviews about which can be found on the net very often, and even more so of viscosity class 75W140, already remains for fans of extreme driving. Of course, and the price for it will be higher.

Having calculated the required quantity (for example, on the Zhiguli - the rear axle leaves about three liters) and comparing it with a kilometer (on the same brand replacement is required every 60,000 km), each motorist can calculate how much money he will get from this or that oil , And on the basis of these data to make a choice.

If we talk about specific brands of transmission lubricating fluids, then we can note several foreign oils that have shown good results:

  • Wellrun showed a record for the welding load.
  • Liqui Moli - an absolute record for resistance to cold.
  • Castrol 75W140 - this is the best result for resistance to overheating.
  • Spectrol Synax (domestic brand) met all the standards, but up to inflated requirements did not last.
