The Octreotide. Instructions for use and description

The drug "Octreotide", the price of which is more than 3000 rubles, contributes to the suppression of pathologically increased production of growth hormone, serotonin and peptides in the gastroenteropancreatic system. The product has a prolonged effect.

Indications

The drug "Octreotide" is prescribed for acromegaly (in case of ineffectiveness of surgical intervention, treatment with dopamine agonists, radiotherapy, inoperable patients or abandoned surgery), carcinoid and other tumors of gastroenteropancreatic system accompanied by carcinoid syndrome. Indications include inflammation in the heart valves, excessive local expansion in the capillaries, skin pigmentation, chronic enteritis, telangiectasia, inflammation in the small intestine. A medication is prescribed for refractory diarrhea in AIDS patients. Octetotide is recommended (the instruction for use confirms this) for the prevention of complications after interventions on the pancreas. Indications include tumors accompanied by hypersecretion of somatoliberin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, gastrinoma, glucanoma.

Dosing regimen

The "Octreotide" agent recommends the use of the instructions for administration subcutaneously. The dosage is 0.05-0.1 mg. The interval between injections is eight to twelve hours. The subsequent appointment is carried out taking into account the monthly monitoring of the blood levels of growth hormone, and also after the analysis of tolerability and clinical manifestations. The optimal dose per day for most patients is 0.2-0.3 mg. The maximum amount per day is 1.5 mg. To prevent complications, the drug is administered an hour before laparotomy. After the intervention, injections are administered three times a day at a dose of 0.1 mg. The duration of the course is seven days. In the elderly, dosage adjustment is necessary.

The agent can provoke anorexia, spasmodic pains (caused by abrupt contractions of the smooth muscles in the internal organs) in the abdomen, vomiting, nausea, steatori, diarrhea. Despite the increase in excrement with feces of fat, there is no indication in practice that prolonged use of the drug can cause an absorption disorder. Some patients have symptoms similar to intestinal obstruction of an acute type. To reduce the negative reactions from the gastrointestinal tract, it is recommended to inject the drug between meals or overnight. Patients with tumors in the pituitary should be carefully monitored in connection with the likelihood of their increase in violation of visual functions. On the basis of therapy of neoplasms in the organs of the gastroenteropancreatic system, in some cases relapse of symptoms may occur. Against the backdrop of continued use of the drug "Octreotide" (instructions for use contain such data), probably the formation of concrements in the gallbladder. There may also be a violation of glucose tolerance when eating, the development of hyperglycemia (persistent type).
